Lost Ark’s stellar performance in Western Regions casts a vast shadow over New World. Will the popular MMORPG be able to recover from its losses?

After Smilegate RPG partnered with Amazon Gaming Studios to release the popular MMO ARPG in the West, Lost Ark has found astounding success during its launch and the weeks following it.

The game became one of the most played Steam games, vastly outpacing many well-known titles such as DOTA 2 and Counterstrike: Global Offensive. Unfortunately, the Korean MMO ARPG has overshadowed Amazon’s MMORPG as farming New World gold becomes unpopular.

The two games share some similarities, such as being published by Amazon and both being MMOs. Unfortunately, this is where the similarities end as the two games have stark differences both in their numbers and their features. Sadly, New World pales in comparison to Lost Ark.

New World vs. Lost Ark

Amazon’s popular MMORPG was considered a massive success during its initial launch as it peaks at around 913,027 active players with New World accounts. These numbers led the game to be included in Steam’s leaderboard. However, the MMO’s all-time peak is far from Lost Ark’s 1,324,761 highest concurrent player count.

Though both games enjoyed stellar releases, the Korean MMO ARPG retained more gamers than Amazon’s own MMORPG after a month. Weeks after its release, New World’s active players were reduced to around 400,000 thousand. Meanwhile, Lost Ark went down to about 600,000 enthusiastic gamers, which is still more than New World.

However, fans should note that the Korean ARPG’s significant loss in active accounts was primarily a result of their mass bans that removed over a million bots. New World still had a severe botting issue when they still had around 400,000 thousand players, so this number is not an accurate assessment of real-life gamers.

Their most notable difference is the way the two games handle issues and problems. For New World, the game experienced severe cheating, exploits, and botting complications. Unfortunately, it took the developers way too long to resolve these issues, mainly eliminating their players. Meanwhile, Lost Ark acted on their rising bot issues right away, which prevented them from going out of hand.

Players should also note that while both games have issues, Lost Ark’s free-to-play model makes the Korea MMO ARPG more bearable. New World’s subscription-based model did not sit well with its fans since the game barely has any content, and it was plagued with countless issues.

New World’s Failure Paved the Way for Korean MMO ARPG’s Success

The most probable cause of the differences between the two games is that Lost Ark has already been around for almost four years. New World was a completely new MMO when it was launched in September 2021. Meanwhile, Lost Ark was already released in KR, JAP, and RUS prior to its Western release.

The Korean ARPG has been live since 2019 is a big factor in its success in Western regions. The game had years of experience in developing, troubleshooting, and optimizing before its new release. Meanwhile, New World started from scratch and was at its infancy stage. This fact means that Amazon’s MMO was bound to make more mistakes.

Due to the gaming studios’ countless missteps and blunders, New World’s community took a considerable beating. Many are reluctant to return to the game despite the developers’ improved approaches to many issues. Fortunately for Lost Ark, Amazon Gaming Studios now knew what to do when they released the game for Western gamers.

Amazon learned much from their initial experience with New World when the gaming studio knew how to resolve similar issues that occurred in Lost Ark. Smilegate and Amazon both acted right away while the botting problem in the Korean ARPG was not yet severe. At the same time, both studios would develop quick hotfixes for any bugs or glitches that occurred.

The Sorry State of New World

Amazon’s MMORPG is now a shell of its former self. The player count has dropped so much that the game only has around 30,000 active players, which is 3% of its all-time peak. Despite the developers’ best efforts to try and revive the game’s popularity, the gaming community has lost their interest in the game.

With New World struggling to grow its community once more, it is unclear what the gaming studio will do to avoid making their once-hit game another Amazon bomb. However, it is not too late for the MMORPG since having around 30,000 active players who still farm New World gold is substantial. Hopefully, the game will mature enough to regain its former glory soon.
