Mortal Kombat is unique in the gaming world because it is one of the very few – if not the only one – of those games that are around for 27 years and still manage to create a huge hype with the launch of every new installment.
Yes, you read that right! It’s been 27 YEARS since Midway released the first version of this remarkable franchise that stood the test of time.
In the almost 30 years that passed since the first version of Mortal Kombat saw the light of day, the character rooster has evolved from the seven playable characters – Liu Kang, Sub Zero, Scorpion, Raiden, Kano, Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade – to no less than 25 in the initial roster of MK 11.
However, as we’re already used to, Ed Boon and his team have prepared a series of DLC that are planned to be released in the months following the launch.
It’s already official that Shang Tsung, Sincdel, Spawn and Nightwolf will join the 25 initial characters with the Kombat pack that is now available. However, as NetherRealm usually does, they hinted that the list of new characters does not stop here.
Right from the trailer released to announce the extra 4 characters that come in the Kombat pack, we were able to see teases for the inclusion of the Terminator and Ash Williams – from The Evil Dead.
Actually, this information was known long time before because they were discovered by a data miner right after Mortal Kombat 11 was released.
While you may think that’s more than enough for now, the same data miner also discovered some traces of another potential character. None other than Batman’s biggest enemy – The Joker.
It’s really a gamble, just like you’d experience when enjoying pokies games at 24pokies.com. However, all the signs seem to indicate that the answer is “YES”.
First of all, the speculations around this character to join the MK universe are very old and they sparked to life again around the launch of MK11. Furthermore, on the 21st of June, Ed Boon tweeted the lyrics for ‘The Joker’ a song by Steve Miller Band that was launched in 1973.
Well, it’s actually just one verse “ Some people call me the Cowboy..” and it could just mean that he’s a huge fan of the track which is quite a banger. However, nothing seems to be coincidental when it comes to Ed Boon and his life-long project.
Even more gas was added by the NetherRealm’s Community Manager replying to this tweet with “what a joker”.
Of course, this line can also be interpreted as a funny comment, however, it’s more likely that this is a carefully constructed plan to unfold The Joker in MK11.
The data mine we mentioned earlier indicates to a total of 19 characters to be added through DLC, so with the 4 already announced and the probability of The Joker to join them, we still have a lot of room to let our imagination run and fill in the remaining 14 spots.
And with the MK universe getting wider and wider with each new release from Mortal Kombat 2 onwards, there’s plenty to choose from. This makes it very difficult for the developers as well because they need to carefully balance any new character with the existent ones and make sure everything fits the storyline as well.
Good candidates may come from the cyborg army of Sektro, Noob Saibot or Cyrax with any of the mechanised fighters bringing a lot of excitement to the rooster. And even if not all players are huge fans of the cyborgs, the diversity they bring can be appreciated.
Switching things a bit, we could also see Goro or Sheeva in the future DLCs. Why? Because fighting against a four-handed monster is exciting. Not to mention that Goro is there right from the beginning and has represented the franchize over time.
Sheeva, on the other hand, did not enjoy the same popularity only appearing in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and Mortal Kombat Trilogy.
The list can go on with the likes of Ermac, a character that started more or less as a Scorpion knockoff, he evolved into being a very interesting figure.
The fact that the’s the merger of the souls of all the perished warriors makes Ermac versatile and very interesting both in terms of backstory and moves. He also enjoyed more presence in recent installments compared to Goro, Sheeva or the cyborgs so fingers crossed!
