Old-School RuneScape has been around since the early 2000’s and still has an impressive player base with more people joining all the time.

With online player numbers hitting more than 100,000 in 2018.  The launch of the mobile app will increase this number even more as new people find the game.

With so many people online, it is likely that there are a lot of people who have never touched RuneScape before and are unsure about where to start.  Fortunately, there is a lot of information you can get and tips that you can learn about money-making, skills, membership and much more.

What is the best way to make money?

When you are trying to level your skills or out on an adventure, you will hit a situation where you need some gold to buy items.

This might lead you to question how some players are able to get items that cost millions of GP. Some people buy gold on sites such as food4rs.com. Substantial money can also be made through skilling.  This is the leveling of specific skills which will help you make more money.

The best skill for this will be Woodcutting and Slayer for members.  Woodcutting is the easiest to start with and you will cut trees, save the logs and then sell them on the Grand Exchange.

The problem with this method is that you will be spending a lot of time on the skill before you make substantial profits.  If you want some quick gold, you would be better off killing monsters or cows and collecting the items that they drop like cowhides.

There are some quests that will provide you with small amounts of gold as well.  However, this is a slower method of getting rich.

So if you are not trying to get rich, you can have a lot of fun with the quests and you will learn a lot more about the world and gameplay.

You have started a character, but now what?

Once you have completed Tutorial Island, you will be dropped into Lumbridge and you might feel confused about what to do next.

There is actually a lot going on and a lot of different ways that you can play the game, but the best solution is to start with some beginner questions.  Questing is a great way to get comfortable with the world, how NPCs work and how to explore everything.

In Lumbridge, you should start with the Cook’s Assistant or the Restless Ghost.  When you complete the Restless Ghost quest, you will get Imp Catcher from the wizard in the tower.

The goal for any new player will be Dragon Slayer and when you beat this you will have some stats that are worth bragging about.

Another perk of questing is the fact that it is a faster route to the Grand Exchange. This requires you to have at least 24-hours of played hours before you can access it.

What is the grand exchange?

The Grand Exchange is basically a marketplace for players from across the RuneScape worlds where they can buy and sell to each other.

So if you are a seller, you offer an item for a price which is sometimes suggested based on market rates.  If there is some who has a buy order for that item for the price you use, the transaction is completed.

The Grand Exchange is a good place for any low-level characters to get items that would otherwise take a lot of time to get.  You can also make a good amount of gold by selling raw materials that you get around the world or when you complete quests.

The Grand Exchange can be a complex marketplace and some people find that it is similar to stock market flipping.

You can buy an item for a low price and then sell it for a higher one, but this is not something new players should worry about.

What is up with skilling?

RuneScape is known for being a grind game.  This means that you spend a lot of time doing repetitive actions to get a skill level.

What this actually means is that the game has the best skilling progression out there.

To get true skill mastery on OSRS is extremely hard with some of the skills needing thousands of hours to get to level 99.  However, there are a lot of incremental milestones along the way and other benefits that you can earn which makes the time worthwhile.

New players will need to pick their core combat stats and some moneymaking skills to focus on.

You do not have to go all in on skills from the start.  It is recommended that you spend some time questing and level your skills to help with this.  Only when you are familiar with the game and your goals will you need to get into skilling.

Should you get a membership?

There are 2 types of RuneScape players and they are the F2P or free to lay and the members.  Membership will cost $11 for 4 weeks.  It is recommended that you play as a F2P player for as long as possible before looking at membership

RuneScape is an amazing MMORPG that allows you to do a lot as a F2P player.  It is better to invest your time and get the most out of the free play content before you start paying for a membership.

If you buy a membership from the start, you will spend playtime doing things that you could have done for free.

It does not matter when you decide to start a membership.  Once you do, there are a lot of possibilities that will open up to you.

It is important to note that around 2/3rds of the content in the game is gated and for members only.  This will include mini-games, new skilling areas, bosses and quests as well as skills.

While there is a lot of content for paid players, it is easier to enjoy all of it when you have been playing the game for a while.

You generally need to have certain skills and meet prerequisites before you can access and enjoy the content.  As a new player, it is much better to focus on your skills and getting through quests.
