The gaming industry keeps evolving. Think about the primitive games that appeared nearly five decades ago. Consider where they are now. The game designers from a bygone era would stare openmouthed if they saw the games that kids and adults play today.

Gaming continues growing as technology becomes more advanced. The better the games, the more people play them. Individuals from all of life’s walks play video games. It draws them together and forms a community.

You might wonder what’s coming next as a gamer. Let’s discuss what we could see in the not-too-distant future in this niche.

The Money

First, it’s worth discussing just how big gaming has become. Right now, gaming generates more revenue than sports and the movie industry combined. That’s insane when you stop to think about it.

In 2022, gaming revenue reached a new all-time high, raking in $184 billion. By 2025, gamers the world over should number 3.6 billion. That’s nearly half the planet.

The Demographics

It’s worth noting that it’s not just kids that play video games anymore. Far from it: 38% of gamers land in the 18-34 demographic that advertisers prize so much.

However, 16% of gamers are over 55. That means many people play video games in retirement. It’s fascinating to think about a 16-year-old kid playing an MMORPG in Tokyo alongside a retiree living in Florida.

What will these gamers see in the near future? Let’s find out.

Virtual Reality

There’s a sci-fi movie called Lawnmower Man. It’s fairly ridiculous, and it has very poor special effects by today’s standards. In the film, a simpleton receives treatments that make him smarter. He can soon interact with people through machines.

Some of the graphics simulate this newly-intelligent character interacting with humans in the virtual world. The movie posits that when someone puts on a helmet, they can enter a virtual environment and interact with it.

People who saw that movie considered it purely science fiction, but that’s what’s coming. Presumably, those who enter virtual reality worlds to play video games won’t become homicidal, like the protagonist in Lawnmower Man, but the gameplay simulated in that movie should soon become reality.

When someone puts on a helmet or some other apparatus, they can enter an environment so real that it will seem like they’re actually there in that world. Think how terrifying that might seem in a horror-themed game. Consider how thrilling it might seem in a fantasy game where you’re riding a dragon or flying through space.

Augmented reality

Augmented reality for games should also come into existence soon on a widespread scale. AR gaming will allow a person who wears the equipment to integrate real-time, virtual game elements into their actual physical environment.

Augmented reality can detect the real world in which a person sits or stands. Then, it overlays game audio and visuals. At that point, new technology should come into play.

To get the desired effect, the player will have a global positioning system, like a car with satellite guiding uses when the driver wants the navigation feature. The player will also have microphones and cameras.

The overall effect should stimulate the player like never before. Some companies have already tried out this technology in the real world. They have sold visors or glasses with augmented reality capabilities with mixed results.

Someone with these glasses, a hat, visor, or whatever else might put it on and walk into a store. The software can interact with the real-world environment, telling the wearer about any product they pick up, such as how much it costs, the origin country, etc.

Augmented reality in games should resemble that. To be safe, the wearer should probably put it on in a controlled environment, though. If they put on the wearable and go wandering off down the street, a car might hit them, or something equally dangerous might happen.

Video game players eagerly anticipate the future

With every new video game generation, new consoles and other equipment hit the market. The latest item costs a lot, and everyone wants it.

That should continue into the future. Although virtual and augmented reality seem like the consensus pick of what gamers want, they’re probably only the precursor. Some game experts feel that games you plug directly into the cerebral cortex will come eventually.

How far will gamers go? That remains unclear. As long as there is a market for new tech, though, it will keep coming.
