Just the other day i saw that someone declared #GamerGate to be dead. That it´is an closed chapter, but if that´s the case.
Then #GamerGate is very alive for being a dead movement. Because i´ve seen more tweets about #GamerGate than ever before over the past 24 hours.
And this war between anti #GamerGate and the #GamerGate movement, is starting to become a really deadly game.
And i´m not “just” talking about death threats, i´m talking about DDos attacks and having people fired from their jobs.
The latest DDos attack would be the one that concerned AbleGamers (which i wrote about in our article “AbleGamers has been DDoS attacked – Who´s to blame? “). But last night i noticed something else, a brand new kind of tactics from the anti #GamerGate folks. Sure, it may not be a “new” tool in their tool Belt.
But they (anti #GamerGate) has started to get more aggressive with this “tool” lately. And that tool would be the tactics of contacting the employers of those who support #GamerGate, and try to get them fired (or just boycott and threat devs, that worksjust fine too).
I don´t know how many people who has lost their jobs because of this. But the most well-known case would be the one that concerns “abbysucks” (she lost her job at tumblr). A case which Mundanematt talked about in his latest video (i have added that video to this article).
Mundanematt also tweeted out this just recently:
“Anti #GamerGate uses bullying tactics and get´s people fired
Anti #GamerGate actively trying to force people in #GamerGate out of their jobs. ( Jennifer
@JennOfHardwire, and abbysucks has lost her job at tumblr)”
And this is what Abbysucks wrote on her tumblr page:
Thanks tumblr, for forcing me to resign from a job that I actually liked, and was paying my bills.
dang, that’s awful. why’d you have to resign from the job, though? did someone contact your employer?
Several people called and sent emails. Some of the emails were apparently pornographic.
They said it was just a liability issue and that was that. I understand why they had to take the stance that
Anyway. .. that’s all I care to say on the subject. I would honestly just like to be left alone for a while.”
And as you can see, this is no longer a game of words and trolling. The battle between anti #GamerGate and #GamerGate has now starten to get up close and personal. And to be honest, i find this to be both scary and disgusting at the very same time.
Because how many more people will have to lose their jobs (and perhaps get hurt irl) before both sides sits down (the leaders of anti GamerGate and #GamerGate) and talk about some kind of peace truce? And that´s something that needs to happen asap.
Because this is tearing the video game industry apart…
