It´s never an easy task to write about someone who you really like that has just passed away. I´m of course talking about sir Terry Pratchet (which passed away at the age of 66 after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s).
And even though i´m not in any kind of way related to Terry Pratchett (i have never even meet him in person, which is really sad in it´s own right).
It still felt like i lost an uncle or grandfather last Thursday (March the 12th). I had a hard time to even grasp the thought of Pratchett being gone from the physical world for all time.
So i became quite depressed, as i have always found a great comfort and happiness in Pratchett´s books. Sure, the books will always be there for me (and others).
But it´s really painful to coop with the thought that Pratchett is no longer among the living. However, there is life after death.
As the spirit of Discworld (and Terry Pratchett) will continue to live on even though Pratchett is no longer here with us.
And it seems like Pratchett´s daughter Rhianna (She has worked on titles such as Tomb Raider, Heavenly Sword, Overlord, and Mirror’s Edge. She was inducted into the European Women in Games Hall of Fame) will take over as the new writer for the Discworld series.
And do to the fact that Rhianna is a really talented author, i´m quite sure that the future of Discworld is in the save hands of Rhianna.
As for me relation to the Discworld series goes, for me it all started with the Discworld 1 game (which was released back in 1996. Teeny Weeny Games, Perfect 10 productions and Psygnosis).
Uptil that point i had no clue what Discworld was all about that. And my interest for the game started when i heard that Eric Idle (Monty Python) would voice the main character (Rincewind) of the game.
Sure, Discworld 1 was (and still are) a really hard adventure game. As the puzzles (and the problem solving parts) are rather darn hard. But nethertheless, it´s still a really good and fun game.
Perfect Entertainment took notice to the critics feedback when they made Discworld II though (which was released in 1997). As the game had less hardcore puzzle solving elements to it (i like part II even more than the original Discworld game).
But i always thought that there would be a Discworld III to be honest. Sadly enough, i was wrong (wishful thinking got me yet again). So i started to read the Discworld books instead (there´s 41 of them in total!).
However, i found comfort in “Discworld Noir” (released back in 1999). Which would be a parody of the noir genre. A really good one too.
And along the way i heard about the “Soul Music” and “Wyrd Sisters” cartoon tv-series. So one could say that i got more and more suckt into the world of Discworld over time.
And in case you wonder which Discworld books (the series has sold over 60 million copies world-wide) i like the most (so far, as i have not read them all just yet). Then i would have to say “Mort” and “Pyramids“.
As both of them contains a lot of funny dialogs, characters and scenes. So where do we go from here? And will the legacy of Discworld be kept alive even though Terry Pratchett is no longer here to nurse and fed it?
I sure hope so! But that´s all in the hands of Rhianna Pratchett. As for my dreams of a Discworld III, time will tell. But for now, i will keep on reading the Discworld books which i have, and enjoy Discworld 1, 2 and Noir.
So thank you for all the memories and all the laughters sir Terry Pratchett. And may you rest in peace.
