If I didn’t know better, then I could have sworn that today was April the first. Yes, I did for a brief moment think that Blizzard’s “StarCraft Remastered” announcement was a joke. Well, it’s not, because the game is very much real:
“Blizzard Entertainment presents a modern take on the original StarCraft experience in StarCraft: Remastered. StarCraft introduced many revolutionary new features that have since become staples of the real-time strategy genre: asymmetric factions, meticulous balance, and a strong emphasis on deep strategy and high accessibility. After more than ten years, StarCraft continues to headline gaming tournaments worldwide.
StarCraft® Remastered upgrades the essential sci-fi strategy experience from beginning to end. Welcome back to the original game and its award-winning expansion, StarCraft: Brood War. We’ve remastered our units, buildings, and environments, improved game audio, and broadened our supported resolutions. Illustrated interludes bring the struggles and victories of heroes like Artanis, Fenix, Tassadar, Raynor and Kerrigan to life-like never before. Most importantly, the strategy gameplay that StarCraft perfected years ago remains unchanged.” – Blizzard
Furthermore, this is what Pete Stilwell (Senior Producer, Blizzard) has to say about”StarCraft Remastered”:
“StarCraft remains very popular, especially in Korea. It’s doing so despite legacy Battle.net’s aging infrastructure, and from the client perspective, graphics, compatibility, and online features that are not up to modern standards,”
“We decided this was going to be our love letter to the SC diehards. So while the team dusted off the repos, rebuilt the pipeline, and rediscovered the codebase, we also spent hundreds of hours connecting with passionate and proactive folks all over the globe: The ones who have been keeping this game going. They gave us insight into the add-ons, game servers, and defined what made Brood War, Brood War.” – Pete Stilwell, Blizzard
In other words, it’s very likely that we’re going to see “StarCraft Remastered” E-sports tournaments in the near future. Especially since it’s said that the game will launch sometime this summer. Well, time will tell. As for here and now though, you can watch the “StarCraft Remastered” announcement video further down the page.
