Sometimes it´s just better to let dreams be dreams. Especially when it comes to Valve, Gaben and Half-Life 3. Because let´s face, it´s nothing more than a dream that will never happen. And sadly enough, that dream has started to die really fast as of lately. Mainly because of The Know´s (who claim that they have an anonymous source at Valve) HL 3 video “Half-Life 3 Will Never Release, Here’s Why -“, and Marc Laidlaw (his a computer game designer at Valve) answers on the recent rumor about Half-Life 3 (IF the picture is legit).
“Say it ain’t so, Gaben! Half-Life 3 will never release, and what’s worse, Valve wants it that way. We have multiple sources all confirming this state of affairs at Valve, so it may be time to put our hopes to rest.” – The Know, a Youtube Gaming channel
“I can´t comment on Valve´s internal process, but I can say that it sounds like someone is trolling. Anonymous sources have been posting speculation masquerading as inside knowledge since the Half-Life 1 delay in 1997. If it’s any comfort, please rest assured that in my experience at Valve, fear is the last thing that would ever drive a decision about what to work on.”
“There’s a misunderstanding that I’ve always tried to address straight on when this question comes up, which is that a Half-Life story can somehow exist outside of a game. It can’t. The story is created through the process of trying to figure out how to best use the features of the engine within the interesting set of constraints it poses. The story is a part of the game. It doesn’t exist as a separate script that is handed off to game designers which they are expected to somehow make compelling through puzzles and combat…the story develops while trying to solve the problem of how to make a fun game. It’s like saying “why don’t you write a sonnet that’s a novel?” The Half-Life story is really only as good as the game that let’s you play it.” – Marc Laidlaw, Valve
So please allow me to summarize all of this for you. The Know claimed to have an anonymous source at Valve, which told the Know that Valve were afraid of releasing anything but a perfected product (Half-Life) 3. As it “might” have a negative impact on Steam´s success story. And this “source” and “rumor” got called out by a Reddit user called “whats_not_in_a_name.” As he/she contacted Valve´s Marc Laidlow to check if there was any truth at all to the story (rumor). Well, according to Laidlow the rumor was nothing more than a trolling/prank kind of thing.
What a surprise, I have honestly lost the count over all the time’s stuff like this has happened. Oh well, I could always play Brutal Half-Life instead…
