Yes, I´m more than aware of the fact that Sergeant Mark IV released “Brutal Doom v20b” not so long ago. And yes, I have played the living hell out of that game (I love BD 20b so far). Even so, I still have to admit that “Project Brutality” (which is a free stand alone expansion to BD) offers the most brutal and awesome Doom experience, there is. Well, at least, in my opinion. And please allow me to tell you why. For example, there are literally millions of settings and options for “Project Brutality” (you can customize the game as you please, and that gives you a very unique gameplay experience), and there are tons of game modes and difficulties on top of that. Not to mention all the different weapons, mods, maps, skins (and god knows what more) which you can add to “Project Brutality”.
Yes, I know what you´re thinking right now “But…but Brutal Doom offers these things as well?”. That is correct. However, I think that “Project Brutality” has taken the “Brutal Doom” experience to the next level. Not everyone will agree with me on that of course, but keep in mind that I have played BD for many years. And I´ve been playing Doom since 1993. So I have about 22 years of experience when it comes to Doom. And I´m telling you right now, “Project Brutality” will blow you away. In my opinion, PB is like a mix of “Brutal Doom“, “Duke Nukem” and “Aliens“. That´s at least the vibes that I felt while playing the game for hours (with the installed mods of my choice). And it´s very easy to get started with PB as well. It’s really hard to stop playing the game though. In fact, I had so much fun when I booted up PB the first time. That I lost all track of time!
I mean, you can spend hours playing around with the mods alone (there are many mods to be found on the Internet). And it´s a piece of cake to load the mods as well, thanks to a program called “ZDL” (it´s a mod managing program). Other than that, you got plenty of ways to kill your enemies. And I´m not just talking about weapons here (most of the weapons have an alternative firing feature as well). No, I´m talking about all the different ways that you can execute people (or demons in this case). As every single enemy in “Project Brutality” has several unique death animations and ways to die (it´s based on what weapon you use, where you shoot and which execution style you have chosen). So as you might imagine, you get a unique gameplay experience every time you boot up a map in “Project Brutality”.
I would also like to point out that PB is even more fun if you play it online with (or against) other people. I had a last while playing PB together with my brother over LAN as well. A word of advice though, if you play PB on the hardest level. Then make sure that you avoid friendly fire, because one single bullet could tear you a new assho** if you´re unlucky. And just so you know. Many of the enemies in PB have new attack moves and alternative attacks now. There are even some brand-new Doom enemies which I have never EVER seen before (watch out for the ghosts!). So if you enjoyed “Brutal Doom”, then you´re going to love “Project Brutality” for sure. Another thing before I forget, make sure that you load your external files (mods, skins and so on) and IWAD´s in the correct order. Because if you don´t, PB might crash on you (the game might not even load).
With that said, have a blast with “Project Brutality”! (don´t forget that you need to buy the original Doom games though, at least if you want to experience Doom 1, 2 and Final Doom in PB) Speaking of which, check out our PB video down below 😉
