Well Sony’s conference has come and gone, and I’ve got to say right from the get-go, I’m pretty disappointed. Don’t get me wrong, I do love most of what they announced this year, however I was left wanting more from them. Last year we had so many awesome titles announced for the PS4, like “Horizon: Zero Dawn”, “God of War”, and Insomniac’s “Spider-Man”. This year we got… “Horizon: Zero Dawn”, “God of War”, and… Insomniac’s “Spider-Man”…This isn’t to say that they didn’t have other content, plenty of games to be released on the PlayStation VR, including the fourth or so mention of Skyrim.

The first game on the chopping block was some in-game footage from “Uncharted: Lost Legacy“, where you play as Chloe Frazer, a character introduced in Uncharted 4. The footage shows adventures focusing around what may be India, given a certain gold item shown throughout the trailer seeming to portray their elephantine god along with some statues. The game is set to release August 22, 2017.

Next on the chopping block is Horizon: Zero Dawn. The expansion to the wondrous game that was released in February is called “The Frozen Wilds”, and it appears to focus around Aloy’s quest for answers through the frozen wasteland of which it takes place. Little more was said about the game, though I will say the connection to Native American culture with the tribe leader wearing what appears to be one of the machine-animal’s “pelts” was a nice touch.

What came after was a game I wasn’t too thrilled to see, considering the market. “Days Gone” showed the protagonist driving around the countryside the game takes place around, shooting wildlife while riding, some quick-time combat, trap setting, and using zombies to take care of human enemies. I’m not too thrilled about the zombie market, so I’m hoping that this game does something new with the genre we haven’t seen before. Did I mention there’s also zombie bears? There’s zombie bears.

A game scheduled to release in early 2018 for the PS4 and Xbox One was also announced that I know everyone and their mothers wanted to see. “Monster Hunter World” was announced where we see the protagonist, carrying a buster sword made from what appears to be the jawbone of some great beast, sneaking around a forest in hunt of what can be summed up as a tyrannosaurus drake. The combat looks amazing so far, and while I have not played a game of this series before, I can say I look forward to hearing more about it in the future. For those of you in the superior master race, the game is set to release on PC at a later date.

Remember “Shadow of the Colossus“? The PS3 classic that everyone loves? Would you like to play it completely Remade for the PS4? Well, now is the time. Coming sometime next year, the fully remade game by Ico looks amazing. I’ve never had the opportunity to play the game before, and now I may have no excuse. I’m looking forward to the release of this game, and hope I’ll have the chance to finally see what all the hub-bub is about.

A fighting game is up next which has already gained reputation for having ridiculously ugly characters. This game is “Capcom’s Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite“. While it looks alright and passable for the most part, some characters, such as Dante from Devil May Cry, and Chun Li from Street Fighter, look absolutely awful in this new art style, something I hope is fixed before their next trailer or gameplay release. You can play their story demo now.

“Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite ” is set for a launch to PC, PS4 and Xbox One on the 19th of September

November 3 has Call of Duty returning to its roots with Call of Duty: WWII“, which released a trailer for the Multiplayer, which looks okay, however I’m not particularly psyched about it because I don’t personally find entertainment in the series, nor do I have the personal knowledge of the previous games to make a comment on how it compares to previous titles.

Unfortunately came the VR games, which were the main meat of the presentation and were underwhelming at best. Games such as “Monster of the Deep“, a “Final Fantasy 15” fishing game where you play as Prompto, “Moss“, a game where you play as a mouse on a magical little adventure in a big world, Bravo Team, which is a military shooter, “Star Child“, which for the life of me can’t see why on earth it’s a VR game, given it appears to be a 2D platformer.

I’m not saying that these games aren’t cool and stylish in their own rights, however the forceful push into VR is getting kind of annoying. There was also the Inpatient, which seems to be a game, possibly horror, that takes place in a mental hospital, which is becoming kind of standard these days. Oh and did you forget about Skyrim? Please don’t forget about Skyrim because now you can play it IN VIRTUAL REALITY. COOL RIGHT? In all seriousness though, it’s just the same game we’ve seen every year for five years.

Am I alone in thinking that the VR version looks worse than the original?

At this point, we reach the part of the conference that I was most excited to see, we finally get some more footage from “God of War 4“. We get to hear that his son is cursed for not being like Kratos. We get to see that the combat is still brutal like one would expect with some awesome axe and shield combos. In the trailer we can also see a wolf that we can assume is Fenrir along with the World Serpent. In the story portions, we can see that the Norse have heard about the warrior Kratos, and Kratos appears to teach his son throughout the game what it means to be a Spartan warrior. This shows us a new dynamic Kratos that has definitely come a long way since the ending of “God of War 3”.

Santa Monica Studio’s “God of War” is coming to PS4 sometime next year.

What PlayStation console wouldn’t be complete without a David Cage game? I’d assume just about any of them, but we still got a look at “Detroit: Become Human, which focuses the idea of subservient technology gaining independence and fighting their human creators. The decision choices appear to be of significance, which is strange compared to previous games from the creator, which, like “Beyond: Two Souls”, which had no story significance depending on what you did, making the game linear. This does not appear to be the case in this game, and as such I look forward to seeing what it’s made of.

I’m sitting here wondering what the purpose is of giving an Android two different colored eyes. Does it serve any purpose or does it just make your protagonist look more interesting? (“Detroit: Become Human” is still a TBA title for the PS4).

Destiny 2 also made an appearance, which seems a little stronger than what I’ve seen from the previous game, giving us incredible weapons and, hopefully, much better story. To go along with the new game, it has been announced that PlayStation will be attaining its own DLC content for “Destiny 2” called “Strike: Lake of Shadows”. This comes with exclusive gear, including a nod at “Spider-Man”, an exclusive ship called City Apex, an exclusive exotic weapon called Borealis, and a PVP map called Retribution.

Finally, we got our look at Insomniac’s “Spider-Man”. This game looks incredible, and while I am no fan of QTE personally, I do feel a game of this stature requires it given the fast-paced action. And thank god they brought back the original Spiderman 2 swinging controls and combat mechanics, from what we’ve seen. Spider-Man’s looking good too in the costume designed for him. The game trailer shows off two villains, Kingpin, which many are familiar with in the Daredevil series and movie, and Mister Negative, a villain I personally had no knowledge of prior to looking him up following the trailer. All-in-all, this was my favorite part of this conference. Though I do have to wonder what Miles Morales has to do with this game, considering the Insomniac website states Parker is the hero of this game, but the end of the trailer shows off Morales, the second Spiderman. The game is stated to come out some time in 2018.

While the conference did give me some of what I wanted, I was still underwhelmed. Maybe it’s because I’ve never cared about VR and that’s where the main focus of the conference was, but it just didn’t feel as good as last year did. I’m hoping that we get some more news on what to expect this and next year from Sony, because I don’t feel like they brought their best to E3 this year. I can only hope that they manage to impress me as we go into next year.

Pros:
+ PlayStation’s stage direction and fancy intros are always a plus
+ Finally some word on Spider-Man and God of War 4
+ Nice looking expansion on Horizon: Zero Dawn

Cons:
– Not enough focus on new games for the main console
– Too much focus on VR
– The third tired mention of Skyrim
– Lacks a real punch I feel they did better on in 2016
– Overall Underwhelming

I am a huge fan of PlayStation, and therefore my opinions may be compromised, even though I found the presentation to be underwhelming at best.
