The dust has finally settled, and I think that it´s safe to say that the PlayStation Experience 2016 conference was an absolute blast, bursting with plenty of game announcements and most importantly variety, it looks like Sony has 2017 locked down with countless exclusives along with a few surprises.

Kicking off the conference, we were treated to a visual feast that kept me guessing for a short while which ended up being a standalone expansion for Uncharted 4 called “The Lost Legacy” which takes place after the events of Uncharted 4 featuring characters Chloe and Nadine. Naughty Dog has stated it will be a longer experience than the Left Behind DLC that was released for The Last Of Us. First impressions are simply jaw dropping as the level of detail is incredible. So it was a solid start for the show with no doubt, and it just got better from there.

Sony had solid showings and a few surprises up their sleeves during the conference. One game really got the crowd going was the reveal trailer for Marvel Vs Capcom Infinite, which was also doubled up with an announcement that Marvel vs Capcom 3 ultimate Edition will be available instantly (and exclusively) on the store at £19.99. This came as quite a shock as Marvel vs Capcom games were removed from digital distribution back in 2014.

That´s just the half of it though, because shortly after that followed the reveal trailers of a few remasters including fan favorite Crash Bandicoot dubbed the “Insane collection”, another major announcement was the comeback of Wipeout Omega collection and remasters of Parappa Rappa, Patapon and Loco Roco are all making their way to PS4. And PlayStation Pro players can look forward to native 4K for such titles.

Housemarque also showed off one of their upcoming games, which deserves a huge mention, because it’s joint developed with Eugene Jarvis (the same guy who made one of my favorite games of all time, Smash TV). Nex Machina was the game shown, and it looks glorious. It’s a top-down twin stick shooter where you go from room to room destroying hordes of enemies and saving humans, fans of Smash TV and Robotron will feel right at home here. Housemarque has a brilliant track record when it comes to arcade games and this is certainly one to watch.

Furthermore, Sony showed off a few trailers for some of their big AAA titles arriving in the next few months as well, including the likes of The Last Guardian (9th December), Gravity Rush 2 (20th January), Resident Evil 7 (24th January) Horizon Zero Dawn (3rd March) and NieR: Automata (10th March). Resident Evil 7 also had a brand-new demo update, which is available on store adding an all-new area and VR compatibility. I spent a few hours on it, and I must say, this has the potential to be PSVRs killer app. The visuals are fantastic, and it’s also pretty darn terrifying! Not only that SUDA 51s gameLet It Die” was released on the PlayStation Store as a free to play game as well.

Ace combat also got a brand-new trailer showing off some sexy jets flying around firing missiles; it’s also going to be playable in VR for those wanting to roleplay a few scenes from Top Gun. Nioh got a new trailer along with No No Kuni 2 and there was also another minor surprise that came in the form of Knack 2! While Knack wasn’t worshiped critically it was still a decent game and let’s be honest here, Knack isn’t just for us adults, there is a younger generation of gamers that might have gotten sick of Lego games being churned out year by year and hopefully knack will find his brand-new audience there, the trailer also showed some new gameplay mechanics and fully fledged Co-Op mode.

There was also a bunch of other games announced during the conference such as Danganronpa V3, Pyre, Dino Frontier (PS VR), Vane, Yakuza Kiwami, Dreadnought, Lara Croft Go, Fallen Legion, Games of Glory, Windjammers and friendship destroyer Move or Die. Gran Turismo Sport also got a new trailer showing off spectacular visuals and some VR gameplay. So, yeah, 2017 is going to be one hell of a year with no doubt.

The classic “One more thing” line is something we’ve all come to love, and they didn’t disappoint. Sony dropped their A Bomb in the form of the Last of Us Part 2, while the game in still early in development we finally have confirmation that one of the best games of all time will have its sequel. Neil Druckmann shared a few details about the game stating it will be a game about “Hate” and that we’ll be playing as Ellie rather than Joel. The release date is probably going to be a good few years until release, which does beg the question “Why now?” while I welcome this game with open arms, we’re going to be in for a very long wait, perhaps it might have been worthwhile simply waiting a bit longer for something more to show, it’s not like Sony don’t have a lot of exclusives on the horizon. Nevertheless, it has got people talking, and people are very, VERY excited for the future.

Sony use the tagline “For the Players” and they really do live up to that phrase, the games that are arriving for PS4 in 2017 look absolutely amazing. I mean, the level of variety is outstanding and there’s something for everyone, young and old, no matter who you are there’s something for you on PlayStation. Looking ahead in terms of software, there’s no competition. While I don’t expect to see Last of Us 2 until 2018/19, there are plenty of games to keep us busy. This was a solid showing from Sony, and it’s only going to get better from here with the likes of God of War, Detroit, Days Gone, Persona 5, Death Stranding, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Dreams, Spiderman and so much more. They really aren’t joking when they say greatness awaits.
