Games industry veterans unveil new trailer for their inventive painterly puzzle-platformer — available to play at Gamescom and PAX West.
Press release:
10 AUGUST 2018 — Games industry veterans Anders Ekermo and Juha Kangas today announce the early 2019 release of Backworlds via a brand new trailer. The pair also announce that the game will be playable in the Indie Arena at this year’s Gamescom — which opens in Cologne, Germany on 21 August — and the Indie MegaBooth at PAX West on 2-3 September.
Backworlds, which has been in development for nine years, is an inventive logic puzzle/platformer game in which players explore and progress by painting. Move between two parallel worlds, each with its own unique set of properties, using your brush to flow seamlessly from one to the other. Solve environmental conundrums by using each world’s physical properties to your advantage, and use your own creativity to craft original solutions to the game’s puzzles.
Ekermo (who worked as a graphics programmer on The Darkness, Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena and StarCraft 2) and Kangas (one of the level designers for Syndicate) began working on Backworlds as a side project in 2009. An early version of the game was nominated for multiple awards back in 2012, and took home the Jeju Games prize at Tokyo Game Show’s ‘Sense of Wonder Night’.
Since then, the pair have been expanding upon and refining their original idea, built using proprietary technology, as well as teaming up with Chris Randle (Volume, Subsurface Circular) and David Housden (Thomas Was Alone, Q.U.B.E. 2) on audio duties.
“We made a game for creative people who like puzzles – if that sounds like you, I think you may like Backworlds!” said Anders Ekermo.
Juha Kangas added: “After 9 long years I’m happy to get more people painting in Backworlds and hopefully enjoy it as much as I’ve enjoyed making it with Anders!”
Backworlds is set to release for PC early 2019. From today, players can wishlist the game on Steam.
