Press release:
8 FEBRUARY 2018 — Space Lizard Studio today unveils its upcoming quirky horror title, Paper Cut Mansion, in a debut trailer that evokes shades of Tim Burton and Danny Elfman. The trailer gives players a glimpse into a dark world inspired by the quaint horror of A Nightmare Before Christmas and the bleak loneliness of games like Limbo and Five Nights at Freddy’s.

Paper Cut Mansion is a procedurally generated roguelike horror game set in a cardboard universe full of surprises. Trapped inside a paper prison, you’ll need to solve riddles, tackle puzzles and battle the mansion’s unusual inhabitants in a bid to unravel the secrets of how and why you’re there – and, hopefully, escape with your life!

The stunning, handcrafted art style was achieved by creating real-life cardboard models and scanning them into 3D modelling software, bringing the developers’ imaginations to life. For the team, it was important that the cardboard didn’t lose its flawed qualities in the rendering process: it’s the blemishes and defects that give Paper Cut Mansion its unique and unsettling atmosphere.

Gabriele Caruso of Liverpool-based Space Lizard Studio said: “My colleagues and I were in a transition phase after launching our previous game Dragon Bros for Xbox One, and during that time I was moving home and was surrounded by cardboard boxes.”

“The emptiness of the new house, and being surrounded by cardboard boxes, made me think that being alone with them was one of the most terrifying things. It was like a maze. This is how we came up with the concept, the fear of the darkness of the unknown in a cardboardish atmosphere.”

An unusual take on the room escape genre, Paper Cut Mansion is already deep into production. However, Space Lizard Studio hope that a crowdfunding campaign – planned for later this year – will allow them to add more features and quality to the game, and release it in the not-too-distant future.

About Paper Cut Mansion
Paper Cut Mansion sees players lost and trapped in a mansion where everything is made of cardboard. And escaping won’t be an easy task! Some of the rooms are locked, and the player will need to solve different types of riddles to advance through the levels. The hints to solve the riddles will be hidden inside the furniture of the mansion, but watch out! You don’t know what else is lurking inside those cardboard models…

About Space Lizard Studio
Space Lizard Studio is an independent video game development studio based in Liverpool, UK. They develop games for next-gen consoles, PC, and mobile. Founded in April 2015, this band of talented friends come from a wide variety of backgrounds in the industry. Starting their career developing a simple game called Yelly Chicken, which released in October 2015 on Android, the team realised they had a special chemistry. This led to them designing their next, more ambitious title, Vampire, Guns & Rock n’ Roll, which eventually became their seminal title, Dragon Bros. The team are now focussed on their exciting new creative project Paper Cut Mansion.
