Before I kick-off my review of Compile Heart and PQube’s ecchi VN/third-person-shooter “Gun Gun Pixies”, here’s a brief introduction of the game’s backstory:
With their planet Pandemo suffering from societal decline, two best friends Bee-tan and Kame-pon arrive on Earth and set-up their base in a share-house of female students, in order to learn about personal interaction and thus friendship.
And with the game’s backstory out of the way, let’s move onto the actual game itself shall we? Well, as I was saying. “Gun Gun Pixies” is playing very much in the style of “GalGun“ (except it’s not an on-rails shooter).
I mean, you have at your disposal Happy Bullets, which are used to render the person you’re aiming at “happy” once a defined amount of happiness has been reached.
Nice indeed. However, This gun needs recharging every so often with easy to find recharging packs. Despite Bee-tan and Kame-pon (collectively known as Pixie Team) being much smaller than their human targets (think Land Of The Giants), they can still be detected if they make a noise or if they stand in the humans awareness cone.
So if this happens to you, then a warning is given and you either have to get out of it as soon as possible or stop moving and try to appear invisible.
As for rooms and whatnot. Well, Each of the girls got their own room, of which you have to explore to carry out each mission. Coins can be collected to purchase new costumes and so on, whilst power packs keep your gun operational and portals let you access other rooms in the building.
Other than that, you can jump on all sorts of things to get to a more advantageous shooting position or to collect any goodies. So, what about the controls then?
Well, the game’s controls are a mixture of keyboard and mouse to rotate the camera. You can run and jump (although how high is limited).
Yes, I know, it sounds all good in theory and all that, but one problem is you can’t rotate the camera in you are in an enclosed space…And that means that it’s very easy to miss important objects. It is also very easy to get stuck on objects, especially table legs.
Another problem with jumping is that it is very easy to overshoot your destination, meaning you usually have to restart from the bottom again (the ladder up to the top of the bunk-bed is one example of this).
In overall though, the controls are okay-ish, but generally, the controls feel rather stiff. Completing objectives is more a test of patience than anything else due to this.
Also, for some reason, you have to use the keyboard to select menu items, and not the mouse, which is really annoying.
Nevertheless. All in all, “Gun Gun Pixies” is a cute and fun ecchi VN/third-person-shooter with no doubt (well, in small doses at least).
Whilst the visual novel section can’t be skipped over (just merely speed it up) and the game camera is dodgy, “Gun Gun Pixies” is certainly an interesting premise that could have done with a bit more work.
And believe it or not, but the biggest down-side of “Gun Gun Pixies” isn’t actually the game itself, but the game’s high launch price (at the time of writing, “Gun Gun Pixies” had a price tag of 44 Euros).
As a matter of fact, if the price had been lower, then I would have given “Gun Gun Pixies” a 4/5 grade for sure.
Simply put, if you’re into ecchi visual novels and shooters, then you might want to give “Gun Gun Pixies” a go once it’s PC price goes down a bit.
Pros:
+ Very nice graphics.
+ Story is interest and funny too.
+ Voices are good.
+ Cute girls and some nice lewd content.
+ You can play around with quite a lot of different weapons, scoops, lingeries and costumes.
Cons:
– The game is very expensive in terms of what you get for your money.
– The controls are stiff and camera work can be dodgy at times. Default mouse and keyboard controls are poorly thought out.
– Jumping is a real pain at times.
– Can be hard to make out objectives.
– Can only speed up the visual novel sections.
Gameplay: 3/5
Graphics: 4/5
Sound and music: 4/5
Controls: 3/5
Replay value: 3/5
Story: 4/5
Verdict: 3/5
SStory-wise and character-wise, “Gun Gun Pixies” is a fun and somewhat lewd visual novel/third-person shooter game, if slightly simple.
The actual gameplay, however, does leave a lot to be desired.Furthermore, based on the game’s very high price tag, you would expect something rather more fun…
So whilst it’s initially interesting, the fun starts to decrease as you battle the camera and controls. Nevertheless, IF the PC price drops for “Gun Gun Pixies” in the future (and IF Idea Factory/SHADE manages to iron out most of the camera and control issues), then you should pick up “Gun Gun Pixies” for sure.
