Toffer Team’s “Hikari! Love Potion” is following pretty much the same formula (and story) as “Hikari! Clover Rescue“.
Anyways, you play Yuuta (a pretty lewd character), who is taken to an alternative world now consisting mainly of women, and whom are now subjugated by the apparently evil Beatrice who has completely dominated the world with her magic.
Well, the craziness doesn’t end there. You see, with the use of an untested potion, (which was supplied by the ex-princess elf Sophia), you need to turn Beatrice’s three main lieutenants against her by satisfying all their sexual desires. So if that sounds familiar, then you’ve probably played “Clover Rescue”…
And that’s something that just happens to be the main problem with “Hikari! Love Potion”…
Because whilst the do offer a somewhat decent story, it’s just really “Clover Rescue” (with a bit of “Sacred Sword Princesses” and “Empire Of Angels thrown” into the mix) with a few changes here and there (although fortunately, this time the English is a lot better).
So, what about visuals then? Well, the characters that you meet are nicely drawn with simple animation and are partially voiced. Furthermore, the game’s backgrounds are pretty nice as well.
As nice as that might sound though, this is pretty much where the positive aspects of the game end, and where the negative aspects of the game begin…
Because the main protagonist isn’t particularly likeable – just merely tolerable, and as usual, the protagonist is just having one single thing on his mind.
As for the other characters. Well, Sophia is nice and all, but she doesn’t really have much of a personality…As a matter of fact, she’s just like pretty much every other girl in other adult visual novels).
So there is nothing really interesting about Sophia, and after testing the initial potion, all she talks about is love nests.
So, is there anything that helps “Hikari! Love Potion” to stand out from the crowd? Not really, no…Because aside from being informed of when you make correct choice, there isn’t really anything unique or exciting about the game.
So what about sound and music then? Well, the game’s music is rather nice, but that’s about it. As for sound, there are a few sound effects in the game, but that’s all there is to it.
However, it’s worth mentioning that the character cast (aside from protagonist) as partially voiced. So that’s something positive on the sound front at least.
So, all in all, “Hikari! Love Potion” is a pretty mixed bag of a game, because there just isn’t all that much to get excited about…Nor is there all that much that makes the game stand out from the lewd visual novel crowd either.
In other words, if you have already played through “Clover Rescue”, then you might want to think through if you want to spend time and money on “Hikari! Love Potion”.
However, if you haven’t played “Clover Rescue”, then you might want to give “Hikari! Love Potion” a try since the game has a rather cheap price tag attached to it.
Pros:
+ Nice graphics.
+ Partially voiced.
+ Sexy babes.
+ The lewd content is on point for the most part.
+ Some of the game’s dialogs are rather entertaining.
Cons:
– Unoriginal story. It seems to have trouble deciding whether its a comedy or something serious.
– Characters are very standard and not particularly interesting either.
– There isn’t anything particularly unique or exciting about the game.
Gameplay: 3/5
Graphics: 3/5
Sound and music: 3/5
Controls: 3/5
Replay value: 3/5
Story: 3/5
Verdict: 3/5
For the given price, “Hikari! Love Potion” is not a bad deal. However, if you’ve played Toffer Team’s “Clover Rescue” then you won’t really need this, as the two are more or less the same.
Furthermore, when everything is said and done, “Hikari! Love Potion” is a rather average visual novel game…Because there isn’t anything particularly unique or exciting about it.
