“Sheep Frenzy 2”, from Crimson Pine Games, is a simple platformer which you must help a herd of crazy sheep to safely cross a gap. The app plays similarly to Modern Fire from the “Game & Watch Gallery” series: you move the platform from side to side and have the sheep hop from one ledge to another, and there are different types of sheep to escort with different mechanics to accommodate for. It can be difficult to follow since the game throws different sheep types at once, but the A.I. seems to use their mechanics to work in your favor.
There are only two modes to play in “Sheep Frenzy 2”: Missions and Endless. On Mission Mode, you have one objective to complete, which boils down to surviving for a fixed amount of time or getting a certain type of sheep (and sometimes a certain tier of one) across. Completing missions will unlock new stages though you’ll have to watch an ad or wait a few hours to play the next one. In Endless Mode, you just play on three lives for a high score, which you can post on the leader boards, with sheep you have unlocked and upgraded (each upgrade tier granting you more points).
There are quite a few stage designs to unlock, though on Endless Mode, the stage you’ll play on is random. They have a cartoony look with bright and colorful designs to go with the bizarre sheep you’ll come across. Each stage also has a different song, all of them having an upbeat tune to go with the rapid deployment of sheep. The ledges of the stages have been worked in as buttons to move the platform. So not only are they functional, but it’s a clean interface in this game. As for the sheep, they are based on pop culture references to go with their mechanics, with tiers closely resembling famous characters.
So, all in all, “Sheep Frenzy 2″ is a really fun game in overall. There are, of course, microtransactions but the gems (currency) used to upgrade sheep for Endless Mode are cheap and tend to have an occasional discount. There’s also a VIP Pass for $5.99 that will remove ads, give a 50% cut on sheep and upgrades, free revives (where without one, you’ll need to watch an ad), and the special VIP Sheep Sheelvis. I honestly think this may help in the long run since grinding will take time, and the occasional freebies will only get you so far. This may be a $6 game if you’re willing to buy the pass.
+ Fun game akin to Modern Fire from “Game & Watch Galleries”
+ Colorful and upbeat presentation
+ Simple controls worked well into the stage
+ Cheap microtransactions
– VIP Pass feels like a necessity
Replay value: 3.5/5
Crimson Pine Games has another good app for Android devices under their name. Even so, you may want to put some consideration into buying a VIP Pass, but I think it’ll make the game more enjoyable. However, even if you stick with a no microtransaction practice “Sheep Frenzy 2” is still a good game nonetheless.
