I think it’s no secret to anyone by now that I’m no stranger to “Duke Nukem 3D“, “Doom“, “Brutal Doom” or “Project Brutality“. Even so, I can’t say that I’ve heard of all that many Brutal Doom-like mods for “Duke Nukem 3D” (I do recall one mod like that, but it’s been so long that I can’t even remember the name anymore). Well, to my big surprise, I stumbled up on a mod of that kind just now.

Even though “Duke Nukem 3D” launched over 22 years ago, the game’s community and fanbase is still very much alive (just look at the mod scene!).

You see, about one hour ago I spotted The Enlightened Boo‘s Youtube video for RPD Guy’s Duke 3D mod “Brutal Duke Nukem” (the video was uploaded to Youtube on the 26th of March this year). Long story short, I got pretty impressed with what I saw. That’s also why I decided to write a post about “Brutal Duke Nukem” =) Anyways, this is what The Enlightened Boo had to say about the mod:

“Brutal Duke Nukem” is what happens when Duke 3D goes “Brutal Doom”.

By the looks of it, “Brutal Duke Nukem” is most likely the most brutal version of Duke 3D to date.

As great as that may sound though, please keep in mind that “Brutal Duke Nukem” (or just “Brutal Duke”) is still just in a very early alpha phase. So if you intend to give the mod a try, then don’t expect it to be perfect or flawless (perfect as in being bug and crash free). As a matter of fact, RPD Guy (the maker of the “Brutal Duke Nukem mod) addressed this matter not so long ago:

“Hey community, About a year I’ve been working on a mod that brutalizes the game. (Still working) I was inspired, of course, by Brutal Doom. I don’t know if there’s already a mod called “Brutal Duke” … if there is one, it will not matter, since mine is not an official mod… I know that many mods around here increase blood and gore too. 😉

After a long time, I decided to release my alpha version. This “Brutal Mod” simply increase the blood effects. (Floor, wall and ceiling decals, bloodspray effects, jibs, shells, actors and some sound effects…). Also, I’ve done two new deaths animations for troop.

To trigger one of them, just kill one of those maggots with a Shotgun when you are closer to them or kick them in the face when in “suffering state”. All effects have been made by myself. I’ve re-used many sprites from the game and from other games. Right now the mod is stored on Bitbucket. Further on I’ll open the repository to public access.

Dukes good old pipe bombs are now causing more carnegie than ever before.

You can literally paint the rooms with your enemies blood and gore in “Brutal Duke Nukem”.

Nevertheless, I’m still pretty darn excited about the release of “Brutal Duke Nukem”, because in my opinion, Duke 3D is still THE best “Duke Nukem” title to date. So in my mind I really like the idea of having a mix of Duke 3D and “Brutal Doom”. I would also like to point out that there is another similar mod called “KickAss Duke” by RichardStorm. However, I have no idea how active or non active that project is.

How to run Brutal Duke Nukem:
Just unzip the “Brutal Duke” folder and place your “duke3d.grp” file inside, then run the “eduke32.exe” located within the folder.
