Law and Order SVU intimidation game has ripped open the jaws of gaming press and spat down It’s throat. The episode summarized what Gamergate should represent, even though it didn’t capitalize each piece of its existence.
For supporters of Gamergate it was a hilarious fallacy that we all applauded and some even cringed at due to Its off-handed nature on the subject.
Raina Punjab (the main character of the “Law and Order SVU” #GamerGate episode) represented a mash-up of Anita Sarkeesian and Dina Karam of Mighty no. 9.
As the episode developed itself, we saw Raina show discord for her employee being raped, and became even more determined to launch her game a Sim of Amazonian culture.
As detectives continued to investigate we saw several name drops–including Kotaku and Polygon references.
The surreal nature of the episode showed us that executive producer Dick Wolf wasn’t concerned with feminists. Furthermore he didn’t care to let one side of the story be shown.
In all fairness Law and Order has always been satirical if real world issues, but on this note it was clear it was just shooting blindly for guaranteed ratings.
The hoax of the episode came when Raina was sexually assaulted during a live stream, by all 3 of her captors and forced at gunpoint to say she wasnt going to launch her game and leave the game development world.
From there it became a game of cat & mouse as the detectives raced to pinpoint her location to rescue her (Damsel in distress trope). By the time they find her, the assailants have wired up a sound system with shotgun sounds after they taped a shotgun to her hands trying to force an officer Involved shooting.
Once rescued Raina ‘ s captors fell to the roof and have a first person shootout with the officers. In the aftermath, Raina admits she should have left gaming.
She also states that the harassers have won and she was leaving the industry. She stands nervously looking out her window suggesting she now had PTSD.
Honestly the context for the episode did lack the raw aggression the show has come to be known for. It also threw the situation In the face of the media.
In the sense that Gamergate could be used to cash in on either side of the debate, Including a neutral party it was easy to see why the show runners did the episode.
