What makes a good video game weapon? What defines a weapon in a game that you’ll remember? Is it the history behind it? Maybe it’s the character who wields it.

Whatever it is, it can’t be argued that weapons in video games have begun to take on a life of their own. Some weapons can instantly be recognized by their defining characteristics.

While there’s been literally millions of different weapons throughout the years, here’s my personal top 10. So prepare to type up that horrific response disagreeing or agreeing with my list.

doom

ID Softwares “Doom” still has one of the best (and coolest) weapon arsenals to date (Robin).

10. Soul Edge – Soul Calibur series

First on our list is this mighty beast.

It as first introduced in 1998’s Soul Calibur. It quickly gained a following due to its characteristics like the huge eye in the center of the blade and the blood like veins running throughout the hulking monstrosity.

It’s always been in my mind due to the weird shape and size of this weapon.

I remember the first time I seen it being wielded in-game. I had to actually pause the match, just so I could go online and read more about made it look like what it does.

9.  Crowbar – Half Life 1&2

This unusual weapon was first introduced in the Half Life series back in 1998.

It’s wielded by the main protagonist Dr Gordon Freeman and can be used to do anything from beating aliens and zombie scientists up to breaking crates to find more ammo.

This weapon truly helped define the series and the main character and has become a symbol of series as a whole.

8. StA 52 – Killzone series

This rifle was first introduced back in Killzone for PS2 in 2004.

It’s quickly identifiable by its top rail system and it’s rear loaded magazine and the fact it’s carried by evil British accented Helghast. It’s a quick-firing assault rifle with a high damage output.

It became one of my favorite weapons due to the buzzing sound it makes when you unleash a full clip.

7. Master Sword – Legend of Zelda series

The Master Sword, also known as The Blade of Evil’s Bane, is a recurring legendary sword in the Zelda series. It’s famous because it’s the only sword that can defeat the evil Ganon in the game it appears in.

It first appeared on the game art of “A link to the past” and has been in each game since, with very little change since Ocarina of time.

I chose this and not his slingshot or clawshot because this weapon is probably the single most defining weapon in all of Nintendo. It’s been in most of the Super Smash Brawls and it’s had guest apprentices in Fire emblem and many other titles.

6. Keyblade – Kingdom Heart series

Personally I wanted to put this higher up on the list. However I can’t due to there being so many more awesome weapons, this still stands among one of the best I’ve ever used in any game.

The keyblade was first introduced in Kingdoms Heart for the PS2 back in March 2002.  It’s quite clearly distinct with its key-like shape, which is unlike anything else I’ve ever personally seen in a video game.

However, it’s always been in my mind as one of the best weapons in video games due to its uniqueness.

I’ve always enjoyed seeing weapons unlike anything else which is why this has always been in my memories.

5. Buster Sword – Final Fantasy 7

This beast was first introduced back in 1997 in Final Fantasy 7 being wielded by the mysterious “Soldier” who later gets named a Cloud. This weapon is a little over 5 feet long according to official wiki articles.

So it’s not exactly a small weapon, however it is dwarfed by some other weapons in the Final Fantasy universe.

The reason this weapon stuck in my mind is due to the shear size of it. The blade is gigantic and it looks like if it was to hit you, it could easily cut you in half, that and every time I see it I remember sweet Aerith….

4. Energy Sword – Halo Series

The Energy blade was first introduced back in Halo: Combat Evolve for the original Xbox. however it didn’t become usable until Halo 2 a few years later.

I added this to the list, because its become one of the most popular weapons in the series due to its distinct duel energy spikes that make it’s shape. It’s also insanely powerful and can easily one hit kill most enemies.

3. Mark 2 Lancer – Gears of War series

This fearsome beast first arrived in Gears of War for the Xbox 360 back in 2006. I chose this to be in the top 10 due to the fact it’s easily one of the heaviest feeling assault rifles in any video game I’ve ever used.

It also rocks the awesome chainsaw bayonet attachment underneath that easily rips your enemies apart and leaves nothing but bodies in its wake.

2. Fatman – Fallout 3 and NV

This unusual weapon was brought about in Fallout 3. Unlike usual launchers, it’s not loaded with your everyday missile or grenade it carries mini nukes.

The fatman is easily able to wipe the floor with any enemy in your path from a raider to a super mutant behemoth. Just remember to bring your radaway if you intend to walk near any crater you’ve created by using this beast.

1. The Chainsaw – Doom Series

When the humble chainsaw appeared for the first time in the original Doom, players had become accustomed to a limited amount of ammo. This was the first weapon they could use continuously.

You can easily rip your enemies asunder with this fearsome beast.

Go ahead and post some insults about it. Is it good or bad?
