“Oceanhorn” has been around for a while now. As it first released on PC back in 2013, then it made its way to mobile devices, and then to current gen consoles (in which we reviewed it for PlayStation 4!). Well, now it’s finally time for the Zelda-like adventure game to make its way to the Nintendo Switch, and to be blunt this just might be the definitive version thus far!

This is certainly the best way to play a game of this kind (in my opinion).

You could say it has been a long time coming, considering the time it took for one of the most Zelda-like games on the market to land on a Nintendo platform. Well, the long wait has finally come to an end, and I have to say that Switch is a great home for “Oceanhorn”. Especially thanks to Switches pick up and go capability. The game runs at 720P 60FPS portable and 1080P 60FPS while being docked, and I’ll have you know that the game looks impressive on both. The game controls works in the same way as it did on the PS4, and to be honest. I couldn’t tell much difference between the two when comparing them on my TV other than the resolution when going to handheld mode.

It’s exactly as I played on Playstation, but in the palm of my hands.

While this is another outing, there aren’t any extra additions or improvements for the Nintendo version; it’s just the PC version of the game and nothing more. However, it’s the actual console itself that makes the game more desirable. So just like the rest of the Switch library, you’re not confined to the TV at home 😉 And yes, while we had that with IOS devices, the Switch’s Joycons just make playing “Oceanhorn” a more pleasant experience.

While “Oceanhorn” is a good game to play on the couch, I certainly preferred playing in portable mode. As the game’s design is great for that too (such as the in-between journeys, for example). You see, I was sailing to one island at a time beating challenges on the fly. There is a slight downside that “Oceanhorn” has been around for a quite a while now, it’s a possibility that many might be double dipping. However, if you own a Switch and have yet to try “Oceanhorn”, then it’s a no brainer. As it of course has similarities to old-school Zelda games. So if you have done everything that can be done in “Breath of the Wild”, then it’s most certainly worth a go.

oceanhorn boss battle

The boss fights are freaking awesome in “Oceanhorn” (the boss battles are even more fun on the Nintendo Switch).

So all in all, the Nintendo Switch appears to be the perfect platform for “Oceanhorn” thanks to the versatility of playing on the big screen or playing while on the go on the small screen. The visuals hold up and the gameplay is as fun as ever, while “Oceanhorn” has four years to its name, it still has life in it yet. From a personal standpoint, this is the definitive version of the game. As you get the best of both worlds, on the couch or on the bus.

Pros:
+ Huge World to explore
+ Great for the Switch
+ Nice Soundtrack

Cons:
–  The game is four years old
–  There are no fancy extras
–  The difficulty ramps up later on

Gameplay:  4/5
Graphics:  4.5/5
Sound/music:  4.5/5

Replay value: 4/5

tgg grade 4.5 out of 5

Verdict: 4.5/5
Cornfox & Bros action/adventure/RPG “Oceanhorn” has been mastering the seas for a good few years now. Even so, it still manages to find a new life on the Nintendo Switch console. So it’s most definitely a must play for fans of Zelda-like games.
