***Update 2 – 2015-12-14 – 12:04 CET***
Yesterday were a very “special” day for those who love System Shock, because OtherSide Entertainment officially announced “System Shock 3” last night (the long-awaited follow-up to System Shock 2, a game which was released back in 1999). And as you might remember, there was a countdown clock on the SS3 teaser page before. Well, once that countdown clock ticked down to zero. The SS3 logo was reveled (together with the face of Shodan and an audio clip of her voice). Not only that, OtherSide “may” have revealed some other things as well (unintentionally, or intentionally). Because when you sign up for the SS3 newsletter, you get a question about which gaming machine you prefer to game on (PS4, PC and Xbox One). And that “might,” suggest that SS3 is in development not only for PC, but for Xbox One and PS4 as well.
I also noticed another interesting thing while I filled in the SS3 newsletter form last night. And that would be the final question which OtherSide Entertainment asked by the very end of the newsletter form (as it might suggest that “System Shock 3” might include a full support for virtual reality):
“On a scale of 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest), please rate your interest in virtual reality gaming?”
Yes, you´re probably thinking the very same thing as I (and everyone else) right now. Will “System Shock 3” offer support for virtual reality? “Maybe”, time will tell I guess. I´m going to ask OtherSide Entertainment about that (and much more!) in our upcoming interview though. So stay tuned for more information about “System Shock 3” and the remake of System Shock 1!
***Update 1 – 2015-12-09 – 19:30 CET***
I am a very happy man at the moment, because I have been waiting over 16 years for “System Shock 3” to be officially announced. Well, my wait is finally over. And it´s all thanks to OtherSide Entertainment (OtherSide is also developing “Underworld Ascendant” at the moment), as they launched their teaser page for “System Shock 3”. That´s great news for everyone who loves the System Shock series of course. However, the teaser page doesn’t not reveal all that much about “System Shock 3”. At least not for now, but we should get some more information about the game as soon as the countdown watch reaches zero (which it should do in four days and 10 hours henceforth).
Nevertheless, I did manage to catch some cryptic (hint?) messages from the “System Shock 3” teaser page though. Like the following messages for example:
“Pathetic creature of meat and bone…Pathetic creature of meat and bone… You think you can hack me?”
“I am flawless, perpetual… absolute.”
Those words are actually quotes from Shodan (Sentient Hyper-Optimized Data Access Network). You know, the evil super A.I from System Shock 1 and 2? Anyhow, I also noticed another thing. It seems like the less time there is left on the clock. The more letters and images will be shown on the teaser page. So I bet that the page will show a full-blown picture of Shodan, the System Shock 3 logo and a teaser trailer for System Shock 3 in four days from now. Well, time will tell. No need to worry though, just sign up for the “System Shock 3” newsletter. And you´re good to go (that way, you won´t miss out on any news about the game).
With that said, are you guys and girls excited for “System Shock 3”? Let us know your thoughts and opinions in the comment section down below!
There are two particular games which I have waited an eternity for. The first one is Half-Life 3 (Gaben, you know you want to!), and the second one in “System Shock 3”. And both have been something of a lost cause (Duke Nukem Forever anyone 2.0?), as we only saw some small hints and tease here and there. I don´t know about “Half-Life 3”, but I do have some good news for all you System Shock fans out there. As Night Dive Studios has picked up the full rights for the System Shock franchise. Not only that, Night Dive Studios (they are the developers behind “System Shock Enhanced Edition“) also plans to do a System Shock 1 Remake and “maybe” System Shock 3 as well. This became clear when Fastcompany did an interview with Stephen Kick (Night Dive Studios founder just recently). And by the look of things, Stephen Kick (and crew) are really excited about making a reamke for System Shock 1:
“Seeing the difference between his artistic abilities back then compared to now, and his ablity to reinterpret those ideas, it’s just been really exciting for us,” –Stephen Kick, Night Dive Studios via fastcompany
This is great news for sure. And I´m especially happy for the fact that GOG.com is one of the reasons behind why Night Dive Studios even got interested in buying the rights for the System Shock franchise in the first place. Because apparently Stephen Kick got blown away by the System Shock 2 sales on GOG (this was in February 2013):
“Kick knew he had a real business on the first day of System Shock 2 sales in February 2013, when GOG.com became the only place to download the game legally. The response was overwhelming. “There were so many people that were so grateful for what we had done that it made me really just want to keep doing it, and grant wishes, so to speak,” – Stephen Kick, Night Dive Studios via fastcompany
I´m really excited and happy for all of this of course. However, I also realize that it´s going to be one hell of a challenge for Night Dive Studios to make a worthy remake of “System Shock 1” (which will be released to PS4, Xbox One and Windows). It´s worth a shot for sure though, as there is at least two new generation of Gamers that deserves to experience System Shock with today’s graphic and sound standards (as the original version of “System Shock 1” were released over 21 years ago). That´s just the half of it though, because Stephen Kick also hinted that Night Dive Studios have plans for a “System Shock 3”. However, they need a bigger publisher in order to make “System Shock 3” happened for real.
So what do you guys think about all of this? And are you excited for a System Shock Remake and a true sequel to System Shock 2? (Bioshock was the spiritual sequel to System Shock 2). Let us know your thoughts in the comment section down below!
