Press release:
Serbia — July, 2026 — Independent developer and publisher Retromagine has officially revealed False Echo, a narrative cryptography thriller set aboard a secret military submarine in an alternate-history world consumed by war. Inspired by games such as Papers, Please and classic submarine dramas, False Echo challenges players to decode messages, classify information, and navigate an atmosphere of suspicion where truth is dictated by the regime rather than reality.
In False Echo, players serve aboard a classified submarine deep beneath the Atlantic as members of the Oppressian Empire, a military power determined to control not only territory, but information itself. Using the mysterious OBSCURA machine, players must process encrypted military communications while ensuring that only regime-approved truths are allowed to pass through the Empire’s censorship systems.
According to Retromagine founder Mirko Topalski, the team wanted to build tension through uncertainty rather than traditional action mechanics. “With False Echo, we wanted to create tension without relying on combat. Information becomes the battlefield, and every decision carries weight because the player never knows who—or what—to believe.”
As the war intensifies, orders begin to conflict, rules change without warning, and cracks start to appear among the crew. Every transmission processed and every conversation held can influence relationships, shape the narrative, and determine who can be trusted. In a world where truth is constantly rewritten, even the smallest decision can have devastating consequences.
Key features include:
Cryptographic Gameplay: Operate the OBSCURA machine to encrypt, decrypt, and process military communications.
Information Control: Review transmissions and determine what information is allowed to pass through the Empire’s censorship systems.
Ever-Changing Rules: Adapt to new directives, conflicting orders, and evolving standards of truth.
Branching Narrative: Navigate conversations aboard the submarine, where trust is scarce and every interaction matters.
Multiple Endings: Shape the outcome of your story through decisions made throughout the campaign.
Atmospheric Pixel Art: Explore a richly detailed submarine brought to life through handcrafted visuals inspired by classic war dramas and retro computer systems.
A World of Conspiracy and Suspicion: Uncover hidden agendas, conflicting loyalties, and uncomfortable truths beneath the surface of the war.
Already approaching 65,000 wishlists on Steam before its reveal, False Echo has gained attention for its distinctive premise, striking pixel art, and blend of cryptographic gameplay with narrative decision-making.
False Echo is currently in development for PC and can be wishlisted now on Steam.
