The Pokemon Volcanion was just revealed December 14th through an official English trailer. According to the trailer and its official web page Volcanion, the Steam Pokemon, is the first Fire and Water type that ever existed in the games.
Looking at its design you wouldn’t think it would be a Fire and Water type. It looks more like a Rock or even a Ground type. While there are some speculations to its real-world inspirations, my conjecture is that it’s somehow related to osen (Japanese hot springs) given that its mountain-like form and steam tank-esque function. What it does resemble to me, however, is a boss from the Mega Man X series: it has a feline anthropomorphic robot shape with some mechanic piece (the topmost portion of the Pokemon) attached to it.
With what information we have on the Internet, I think this Pokemon would make a decent offensive tank. Its defensive stats are fair enough to focus on HP with take hits even from its weaknesses Rock, Ground, and Electric, which deals double damage. Maxing out its Special Attack EV will certainly turn up the heat and between its level up and TM learnsets it can have some moves that can stick some nasty status effects on its opponent such as Sludge Bomb. Volcanion’s signature move Steam Eruption, a stronger and slightly less accurate version of Scald, is a very useful move since it’s possible to both leave the target burned and frozen at the same time.
Its information and stats have been out for some time now but with this announcement coming in around the Hoopa distribution, it may come out sooner than we expected. And with the last special Pokemon coming around the corner we might also see where the Strange Souvenir came from. So, full steam ahead to 2016!
