You know, even though I’ve been playing “Doom” since it’s release back in 1993 (and tons of different “Doom” mods since the 90s). I still haven’t heard of anything quite like JP LeBreton’s “Mr. Friendly” Doom mod. You see, “Mr. Friendly” turns “Doom” into a nonviolent Animal Crossing-like game.
Yes, you read it right the first time. You don’t have to take my word for it though, because this is the actual mod description for “Mr. Friendly” by Mr. JP LeBreton himself:
“A cozy Doom mod that radically repurposes any Doom level into an Animal Crossing-like nonviolent social space where each monster has a name and something to say. You play Mr. Friendly, a Guardian Demon tasked with helping improve the lives of Hell’s minions as they recover from the latest space marine rampage. Level exits work normally; the point is to chill out, do quests, interact with stuff, and explore.” – JP LeBreton
As cool as that might sound though, please keep in mind that you need GZDoom (3.3 or later) and the old “Doom” games (“Ultimate Doom”, “Doom 2”, “Final Doom”) installed in-order for “Mr. Friendly” to work (you can also play user-created vanilla Doom levels with the “Mr. Friendly” mod). Furthermore, the mod is still very much is development. So that means that there is placeholder art to be found in the mod (and some bugs and glitches).
Even so, “Mr. Friendly” is still very much a very interesting and entertaining mod I have to say. Mainly so because it has turned “Doom” into something entirely new and very unexpected (I for one did never expect to play a nonviolent version of “Doom” where you help and talk to demons).
That’s also why I’m truly curious to see what the future has in stores for the “Mr. Friendly” mod, because I have a feeling that the mod will continue to evolve over time (“Mr. Friendly” launched its build 61 release about one week ago. In other words, there will be a lot more build releases before the final version sees the day of light).
Anyways, if you like what you’ve heard of “Mr. Friendly” so far, then you can download and enjoy the mod today =) And if you’re still not quite sure if this is mod is your cup of tea or not, then you could always watch the latest game dev video further down the page 😉
And with that said, what’s your take on the “Mr. Friendly” mod? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section down below!
