There are plenty of Metroidvania games on the market right now (titles that are in the making, and games that have been released just recently). However, there isn’t exactly all that many 4-Player Co-Op Metroidvania games out there. So Dream Within Studios (a Houston, Texas based studio) indie game “The Dream King” feels like a fresh wind for sure. And I have had my eyes on the “Dream King” project for a rather long time now as well (I found out about the game last summer). And by the looks of it, “The Dream King” (which will be released to Windows, MAC and Linux) will be released very, very soon. In fact, on the “The Dream King´s” Steam page it´s stated that the game is set for a release this year (“The Dream King” got greenlit on Steam Greenlight not so long ago). So “hopefully” that means that we should be able to play the game in the near future. A fun fact by the way, the whole game has been developed in GameMaker.
Anyhow, why am I so excited for “The Dream King” then? Well, just take the fact that the game is heavily inspired by some of the very best 16-bit games of the early 90s. And I´m talking about titles such as “Super Metroid“, “Super Castlevania“, “Street Fighter 2” and the “Mega Man” series (there also RPG elements to be found in “The Dream King” as well). And that´s just the half of it, because not only will we get a single player campaign. We will also get mini-games, a local versus and local Co-Op support with up to four players. Well, I don´t know about you, but in my opinion. That should be more than enough to make any 16-bit Metroidvania fan drool all over the place. Other than that, Hiroki Kikuta (the composer of Secret of Mana) will create some tracks for “The Dream King”. So I would lie pretty hard if I said that I wasn´t excited at all for “The Dream King”, beacause I really am.
And “if” everything works out just fine on Steam, then there is a slight chance that “The Dream King” could be released to PS4, Xbox One and Wii U as well. So far, so good though, and Dream Within Studios has come a long way since they reached their Kickstarter goal back in July 2013 (90 backers pledged $1,845 to “The Dream Kings” Kickstarter project). So I´m going to wish them the best of luck with their Steam release and future plans!
With that said, what do you guys and girls think about “The Dream King” so far? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section down below!
