I honestly thought that I was dreaming when I heard the news about the PC launch of Voidpoint’s and 3D Realms old-school-like FPS game “Ion Maiden“, but no, it’s 100% true (the game is out now via Steam early access). Furthermore, I had no idea (whatsoever) that HDoomguy worked as a spirit artists for “Ion Maiden”. Well, that’s true as well. You see, just recently HDoomguy dropped the news via Twitter (don’t miss out on HDoomguy’s lewd Doom mod “Monster Girl Quest 3D” as well!):
“Been hinting at this for a while, and now we’re finally ready to reveal. I’m one of the sprite artists for this game (gore, cleanup, etc so far) and I’ve been having a real blast. I hope you have as much fun playing it as I do working on it!” – HDoomguy via Twitter

One can’t help to think about “Shadow Warrior”, “Blood” or “Duke Nukem 3D” while playing “Ion Maiden”. That’s a good thing in my book though, because I love those games.
Well, that’s some really great news for fans of old-school FPS games with no doubt, but what exactly is “Ion Maiden” all about then? I’m glad that you asked, and here’s the official description of “Ion Maiden”:
“3D Realms (Duke Nukem 3D, ROTT, Prey, Max Payne) is excited to bring back our famous Build engine, which powered Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, Shadow Warrior and other 90’s hits. Of old-school throwback games, ION MAIDEN is the real deal, using our original tech from that famous era that launched the FPS genre.Welcome to ION MAIDEN!”
So, what about the actual story of the game then? Well, here’s what’s known about Ion Maiden’s story so far:
“Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison earned her codename as a bomb disposal expert for the Global Defense Force. When transhumanist cult mastermind Dr. Jadus Heskel unleashes a cybernetic army on Neo DC, Shelly decides it’s time to start chucking bombs rather than defusing them. Her journey will leave trails of blood and gore in huge, multi-path levels filled with those famous colorful keycards and plenty of secrets and Easter Eggs to discover behind every corner.”

“Ion Maiden” is said to be the true successor to classic shooters such as “Duke Nukem 3D”, “Shadow Warrior” and “Blood”. Well, that sounds about right, at least by the looks of it.
As for features, here are some of the said launch features for “Ion Maiden”:
– The true successor to classic shooters such as Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior and Blood.
– Built using the original “Build” engine, with additional enhancements to further improve the technology.
– Beautiful hand-crafted artwork, built using original old-school tools and methodologies.
– 7 exciting Zones, each spanning multiple maps.
– Tons of enemies, weapons and carnage!
– Best of both worlds! ION MAIDEN brings back the classic ’90s FPS action you love, with modern additions such as physics and checkpoints.
– Classic level design, no procedural generation! Expect multiple paths, cool effects, and complex set pieces!
– True tracked module music!
– Incredible weapons with alternate firemodes!
– Easy access to development tools and modding (Steam Workshop) on day one!
– … And about Multiplayer… Stay tuned!

“Ion Maiden” is full of deadly monsters such as these (as if the spiders from “Blood” wasn’t bad enough…).
I don’t know about you guys and girls, but I really like the sound of that. So I’m going to give “Ion Maiden” a go as soon as possible, because I grew up playing FPS games such as “Blood“, “Duke Nukem 3D” and “Shadow Warrior” =)
And with that said, what’s your take on “Ion Maiden” so far? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section down below!
