Yes, it´s almost show time for ID Software´s FPS game “Doom” (the gates to hell opens on the 13th of May to Xbox One, PS4 and PC), and after spending a few hours playing the closed beta of Doom to the PS4. I think it’s safe to say that this game is ultra violent, bloody, and the explosive action will make fans feel right at home (with no doubt), and make newcomers realize what they missed out on. And even though I have played tons of FPS games and most of the previous Doom titles in the past. Nothing could prepare me for the gallons of blood, giblets and carnage that the Doom beta had to offer; I haven’t enjoyed an arena FPS game like this in a very long time!
My first time playing the Doom multiplayer was an exquisite mix of action, gore and demonic slaughter, kneeing someone in the face to the point their head explodes is certainly a site to behold. As a Multiplayer shooter Doom is a competent entry that has the potential to be one of the best FPS games to release this year. It has the building blocks of a winner, vast customization options, excellent sound and visceral action that one would come to expect from a Doom game. The pacing of the combat is perfect, there’s no sprint button so everyone is going at a balanced pace keeping fights frantic. There is also various power-ups that can be collected such as special weapons or ability power-ups, for example. One power-up lets you become a demon for a short period of time with some serious ass whooping capabilities.
Customization is also pretty extensive. You can change the look of your Doom guy with different armour skins, camo patterns and colours. You can even choose if you want to look worn and weathered or be in a nice shiny suit of armour. Furthermore, the Weapons can be customised with carious camo patterns. There are also hacks to be found in the game (which you earn after each match that can be used to help you earn extra ex or other various boosts for a short duration). There are even taunts that can be used for comedic effect just for those moments when blowing someone’s head off isn’t insulting enough!
Other than that, there is a nice variety of weapons from the classic double shotgun to heavy machine guns and sniper rifles, most of the weapons don’t kill instantly like you’d see in Call of duty, there’s a bit more damage fall off so you can take a beating. However, while on low health, you’re vulnerable to the brutal execution moves. And you can be killed in quite a few horrific ways too, like having your neck snapped or just punched into oblivion following the arena announcer saying things like “Glorious” and “Unstoppable”. Nevertheless, the execution moves feels brilliant when you go on a mini rampage getting multi-kills.
The maps themselves aren’t exactly bursting with color, but hell isn’t exactly full of rainbows either (if you get what I mean). As you will find warp holes, rivers of blood, tight corridors and open hell:ish spaces (so you can get the drop on someone) all over the place . There is also a hand full of different pick-ups littered everywhere such as health, armour and ammo . All of which give you the incentive to keep moving before your enemy gets a special weapon or more armour. I didn’t notice anything that could be classed as over powered other than being against a solid team which can be a grind. At the moment, there are only two game modes on offer. However, I hope there are more available in the final game. And since there are various editing options for players to create their own modes, we could see some very interesting this in the future.
And my first impressions of “Doom” go a long way, as the closed beta left me with a smile on my face and a lot of pleasant thoughts on my mind (or unpleasant, depending on who you ask). As the beautiful visions of hell and the brutal bloody combat is more than I could hope for. Bethesda look like they are set to release one of the best shooty games this year. And it’s only just around the corner. So ID Software´s “Doom” is certainly on my to-buy list.
