There seems to be no end to the PR-nightmare called “Mighty No.9”. I mean, even though we have previously published posts such as “Mighty No.9 is one of the most disappointing game titles ever“, “Three months later Mighty no. 9 is still a failure” and “The outcry and the aftermath over Deep Silver´s Mighty no. 9 Youtube video“. The madness just doesn´t seem to end, because earlier today I (Robin Ek, TGG) was informed that it appears as if some of Mighty No.9´s backers still haven’t received their rewards (this became publicly known after a Reddit post by Skaarg, as seen in the first picture down below).
And as you might imagine, due to both anger and disappointment there were quite a lot of comments about the matter on both the official MN9 subreddit and the games subbreddit. However, there was one comment that stuck out from the crowd:
“Mighty No. 9 was finally released on June 21st, and almost 6 months later Comcept has not sent out any physical rewards other than t-shirts early in the year. Those who backed the game for the handheld versions have just been told by Engine Software (the company porting the game) that it is in development with no scheduled release date. Mighty No 9 twitter and kickstarter page has been silent since September 15th as well. I know it’s happened in the past, but this should serve as another painful, expensive lesson to those who are passionate about a potential kickstarter even when famous industry people are involved. Personally I believed the game was short but decent. I was never overly concerned with the graphics debate since I knew it would have to be scaled to handheld platforms as well. As a life-long Mega Man fan who spent thousands of dollars on Mega Man games, merchandise, collectibles, and prototypes I’m just disappointed in a creator I admired letting his biggest fans down this hard.” – Skaarg, Reddit
That´s 100% spot on, because it´s true that MN9 should work as a lesson for anyone who plans on backing games via any crowdfunding platform. Simply put, you can´t be naive, and don´t let yourself be blinded by fandom, nostalgia or childhood memories. Because sadly enough, there are people who will try to fool you out of your trust and money. So one must always be careful and be somewhat skeptical when it comes to projects such as MN9 (especially when it comes to a person such as Keiji Inafune, as his well-known for not being able to handle project budgets all that well). As you might just end up being ripped off.
Furthermore, you could also ask yourself where all the money for MN9 went to? I mean, the game raised almost 4 million USD on Kickstarter. Nevertheless, MN9 turned out to be anything but the game that the fans wanted. Furthermore, just look at Wayforward´s “Half-Genie Hero”. The game didn´t even get 1/4 of MN9´s Kickstarter funds (“Half-Genie Hero” managed to collect 776,000 USD in total). Even so, “Half-Genie Hero” puts MN9 to shame with no sweat at all. So once again I kept help to wonder how MN9´s money was managed. As it´s quite obvious that MN9´s budget, deadline (s) and production were handled really poorly.
Nevertheless, we can´t change the past (sadly enough). However, we can change the now and the future. So I (Robin Ek TGG) have reached out to Comcept via e-mail for a comment on the matter of the Mighty No.9 missing backer rewards.
And with that said, what´s your take on all of this? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section down below!
