Being a termite isn’t easy in video games. And the mobile game “Bitmite Blitz” is the living proof of that. As you have to race to eat some wood and collect coins while avoiding obstacles. Depending on the level you pick you may be dodging spiders, toy trucks, or flying staples (complete with a Milton achievement). Along the path you can get a quick slurp off of an energy drink that’ll boost your termite’s speed as well as give it a x5 score multiplier.

bitmite blitz spider attack

This termite can get juiced, but it can’t kill the spider.

The game is quite fun to play using the touch controls but it’s a bit of a different story with the tilt scheme. Aside from rearranging yourself to see the screen in its neutral position (complete horizontal) tilting can be a bit of a handicap at first. Fortunately, you can adjust the sensitivity on the controls so you won’t be flying around on the screen. Presentation goes for the modern pixel style, but it tries to go as old-school as possible. Not only do the sprites sport a retro design, but they also use few frames for animation. It does look like a PC game from many years ago. However, I can tell you that it’s not close enough. The chiptune music is one of the best I’ve heard, with the normal difficulty Tree level track rocking enough to jam to.

bitmite blitz micro logs of wood

Everyday items can be a hazard to stop you from eating those delicious micro logs of wood).

While the game is free, you’ll have to unlock the levels. There is, or course, the in-store app method which you can pay to unlock individual or all the levels. Paying for all the levels will also remove the ads (which comes after a certain amount of deaths). There is an option to remove the ads as well, and allow you to unlock the levels yourself (just pay the $2.99 for the full package to save you the effort). However, If you don’t want to pay for the game. Then all you have to do is get a certain number of achievements and unlock the levels with your skills.

Pros:
+ The graphics sport a retro style termite as your character
+ Chiptune soundtrack is one of the best I’ve heard from a mobile game
+ Fun runner with different options to play

Cons:
– WiFi necessary: Video ads after some deaths
– While the in-app shop gives you options you might as well pay $2.99 for everything plus Ad Removal

Gameplay: 4/5
Graphics: 3.5/5
Sound/Music: 4.5/5
Controls: 3.5/5
Replay value: 2/5

tgg grade 3.5 out of 5

Verdict: 3.5/5
“Bitmite Blitz” is a neat time killer if mobile games don’t bug you much. If you want to be serious about the leader board though, then plug your device in, grab an energy drink, and watch your termite fly.
