A couple of days ago, Broc Copeland (Pixel x Pixel Games) contacted us via mail, because he wanted to introduce us to his upcoming story-driven 2D action-adventure RPG “Guardians of the Rose“. And good thing that, because when I heard that the game has been inspired by 8 and 16-bit classics such as “Zelda“, “Super Metroid“, “Megaman X”, “Gauntlet” and “ActRaiser” (to name a few). I just had to check “Guardians of the Rose” out, so I watched the Kickstarter video and checked out some pictures via the game´s homepage. And the pixel art graphics truly made me think about the golden age of 8-bit and 16-bit consoles. And even though GOTR is in an early pre-alpha stage, the game still looks very impressive.

“Guardians of the Rose” is like a mix of old-school “Zelda”, “Gauntlet” and the RPG elements from the “Elder Scrolls” series.

I also thought about another thing while watching the Kickstarter movie. Because I thought that the main character of “Guardians of the rose” reminded a bit about the kid from the “Mighty Max” cartoon TV-series. Sure, maybe it´s just me, but “Mighty Max” was actually the first thing that I thought of when I saw the little boy from “Guardians of the rose”. And not only that, while I was watching the trailer I felt some “The Elder Scrolls” vibes as well. So I really like the look and feel of the game, and the soundtrack (8-bit chiptune music) seems to fit the world of “Guardians of the rose” rather well I have to say. So, what about the story of the game then? Well, it goes a little something like this:

“Guardians of the Rose is a story of high adventure, taken on by a small group of companions, that are seeking to overthrow the Great Witches that have assumed control of the kingdom. You are a newly christened member of the Royal Guard, the magic-keepers of the king. With the Royal Guard now tainted by witchcraft you have no choice but to take it upon yourself to form a new Guard that will overthrow the witchcraft that has enslaved the kingdom. Encounters with river spirits, groundlings, giants, and dragons alike are some of the adventures that will befall you.”

No adventure game worth the name is complete without at least ONE desert area.

That´s great of course, but there is a catch to all of this. And that would be the fact that Broc Copeland needs to reach his 7,500 USD goal on Kickstarter (at this time “Guardians of the Rose” has raised 1,700 USD, with 25 days left to go), so “if” Copeland (and his team) would manage to reach that goal on time. Then “Guardians of the Rose” will be released in May next year (for Windows, MAC, Linux, PS4 and Xbox One, and “if” the stretch goal of $80,000 is met, then game will be released on Wii U, 3DS, & OUYA as well). And as much as I love the sound of that, I really wish that there was a playable demo for “Guardians of the Rose”. As I would like to give GOTR a try today, but I guess that I have to wait a bit longer for a demo.

guardians of the rose the world

In “Guardians of the Rose” you got a whole content full of adventure, danger, magic, ancient ruins and much more at your disposal (you will also meet friends along the way).

Especially since the game is said to offer epic boss fights, action intense battles, multiple endings, tons of magical artifacts and a compelling story. I also like the part about “magic Vs Witchcraft“, “Open-Ended Adventuring” and “Choose your own way to play”. So it´s going to be really interesting to see if “Guardians of the Rose” will be able to deliver an awesome 2D action-adventure RPG gameplay experience on release. Time will tell I guess, as for here and now though. You will find the “Guardians of the Rose” trailer down below, so I hope that you will enjoy it.
