It´s been about 20 years since the last time I played Digital Café´s “Doom” mod/clone “Chex Quest” (the game was originally released back in 1996). And I can´t say that I´ve thought all that much about the game over the years. However, I did enjoy the game as a kid. Even so, I got quite excited when I found out that there is an HD remake of “Chex Quest” in the making (which runs on Unreal Engine 4). This became known when Zam did an interview with “Chex Quest” artist Charles Jacobi less than one day ago. And funny enough, while I was reading through the interview. I also found out that there are a “Chex Quest” 2 and 3 as well. And I had no idea at all about that. So that was a pleasant bonus for me, I have to say.
And I truly hope that Charles Jacobi will be able to make a really awesome HD remake of “Chex Quest” (aka “the most successful advergame ever“, since the game won both the Golden Reggie Award for promotional achievement, and the Silver EFFIE Award for advertising effectiveness). Especially since the original game will celebrate its 20th anniversary later this year. Well, time will tell. Jacobi did point out the following for Zam though:
“I’ve always kind of wondered about like ‘Well, what would it be like if I just did a remake of the first one, but with a modern game engine?’ And at my professional job, I use the new Unreal, Unreal 4, and I love it. It’s a really powerful tool set, especially for content people…I don’t necessarily need to be a programmer and I can build lots of functionality with it. So I’ve started building, basically, a high-def remake of the first one.” – Charles Jacobi, “Chex Quest” artist
In other words, Jacobi is more than eager to transform the original “Chex Quest” game into a really nice Unreal Engine 4 FPS experience.
