I don’t know if I (Robin Ek, TGG) have mentioned it before, but we’re starting to get more and more fans from Brazil. That’s freaking awesome, because it would be great if we could get more fans from South America (there is a huge Gaming market over there). Even so, I’m not quite sure if our rise in popularity in Brazil is due to our past posts about Paulo Andrés games “MarloW in Apocalyptic Acid World” and “Virgil’s Purgatory“. Oh well, time will tell, and speaking of Paulo Andrés. He just introduced us to his new retro-like arcade/platform game “Devwill“:

“Hi, TGG staff.

Just giving a word to tell about my 4nd game, and 1st try on greenlight. If you decide do publice my text please correct my bad “engrish” on the way 😉

Devwill is a platform arcade game, with simple graphics and gameplay. All visuals are almost in black and white, with some details with some color saturation. The important aesthetic detail comes from the “old B&W movie” effect, screen scratches, old projector sounds, and features typical artifices black and white films, especially Nosferatu (1922) and Metropolis (1927), two landmarks of German Expressionism in cinema.

I’m very aware that such references are not new in the world of games: a famous game like Castlevania, for example, was inspired by movies like Nosferatu’s and Bela Lugosi’s films. Thinking about it, I also make reference to the movie “Creature from the Black Lagoon”, horror film “B” of the 50’s, an obvious inspiration for the Castlevania series. So I try to take up this practice of seeking inspiration in the cultural assets of the past, and I make this experience with the Aesthetics and narratives elements of Silent B&W movies.

“Devwill” gave me one hell of a retro flash back to the days of old-school platform/arcade games (late 80s/early 90s).

Well, I can’t speak for everyone else, but I find that to sound rather cool. Furthermore, I really enjoyed the trailer for “Devwill” (you can watch the trailer down below!). So if you’re into retro-like arcade/platform games, then you might want to download the demo for “Devwill” =) (the demo is only available for Windows only) And “if” you enjoyed the demo, then show the game some love on Steam Greenlight 😉
