I’ll be honest, I was a little surprised at this year’s E3 presentation from Ubisoft. I don’t know if it was the fact that they held off on their dance number for a while or the fact that they didn’t have an extended gameplay of trailer of the latest “Assassin’s Creed” game (a trailer that was so boring it put me to sleep…Yes, I fell asleep during their Odyssey trailer last year).
Anyways, my point would be that Ubisoft’s E3 2019 press conference was nowhere near a perfect presentation, but it was certainly better than last year.
Following an opening musical number for Assassin’s Creed Symphony and an announcement of a Symphony tour starting on the 29th. We then got some footage of our first game, and one that got me interested right away.
I’m of course talking about “Watch Dogs Legion“, and in this “Watch Dogs” game the story takes place following an event that left the country of England under the control of a military presence, and it’s the player’s job to form a resistance and fight back.
You can play as anyone in the city, and that includes everything from From punk thugs, to computer nerds, to a sweet old lady who carries a stun gun and a thirst for blood.
You know, from my point of view. “Watch Dogs Legion” seems to be very Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood-like in that aspect, as you have to recruit new members to fight for your cause over the course of the game.
The first time that you are taken down, you can either resist or surrender. However, if you go down again, it’s permadeath and that character is gone forever.
I’m actually pretty interested in “Watch Dogs Legion”. I mean, just the fact that there are so many characters, each with their own origin story mission could be very promising.
However, this comes with one concern: That the game is so focused on the individuals that they completely forget that there’s an overarching story that they have to pay attention to.
Nevertheless. So far, the game’s looking good, and I can look forward to checking it out on March 6th of next year (2020).
Next up came something that I definitely didn’t expect hit the big screen at E3 and that was “Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet“. This fairly generic name is actually that of a TV show created by the same people who made It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
This TV show will be about game devs and the situations they get into behind the scenes, and they wanted to work alongside Ubisoft for this one because they know that if there’s any community that can sniff out bullcrap, then it’s gamers.
Anyways, “Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet” is coming to Apple TV, but if it comes to a platform that I can access, that remains to be seen…
And I’m honestly not quite sure if I’ll check the show out even if that’s the case. As it doesn’t seem to be my cup of tea (maybe I’ll catch a couple of episodes later on).
Up next is the first of several announcements from the Tom Clancy type games: “Rainbow Six Siege: Phantom Sight“.
It starts off a new season with new content including two new characters, Warden, a secret service member with an 80s cop mustache, and Nokk, a character who can turn invisible to all cameras and electronic devices when she walks.
So, yeah, it’s kinda of standard with no doubt…And I’m not really a Tom Clancy kinda guy either, but maybe I’ll give it a shot one day.
So, what’s next then? Well, “Brawlhalla” is getting Adventure Time content that’s available today!
Truth be told though, I don’t really know “Brawlhalla” all that well, nor am I interested in “Adventure Time”… But that’s an announcement for the people who care about that stuff.
Second up in the Tom Clancy games E3 2019 line-up is “Ghost Recon: Break Point“. Following Wild Lands, “Break Point” shows us a military commanding officer giving a pep talk to his troops about the enemy.
Tells them that while the enemy knows the grounds, they have the element of surprise. I don’t know much about the series, but it seems to me that this game has a few guerrilla fighters against a massive military force and the odds are against them.
At this presentation, they promised that this next group is the toughest the Ghosts have ever faced, and the Beta will go live on September 5th and you can register now for your chance to play.
For this game, new content and free updates are promised, and a Terminator teaser played right at the end.
Moving on, “Ghost Recon Delta Company” appeared for a brief moment, where it will give people the opportunity to talk with the developers, which is something that I’m always all for.
The next thing to hit was something that appeared to be a mobile game called “Tom Clancy’s Elite Squad“, where you get to play as specialists and characters from a bunch of other Tom Clancy games in a strategy RPG.
Well, the game looks pretty cool, but it’s not anything that I’m particularly interested in (at least not until I can try out some of the other Tom Clancy games).
And of course it wouldn’t be Ubisoft without a wacky, ridiculous dance number for “Just Dance” (which is releasing its 2020 edition to all formats next year).
I wouldn’t even mention it if it weren’t for the fact that I noticed that the game is coming out on the Nintendo Wii, which I found absolutely hysterical.
What more, ah, yes! “For Honor” is getting more content in the shape of the new in-game event “Shadows of the Hitokiri”, telling the tale of a samurai who killed an entire village and becoming a spirit of death.
As awesome as that might sound though, not all that much is really known about this update yet…So it’s hard to say what all it will entail. Though it does appear to me to at least include a PvE update segment.
So, did you think that we were done with the Tom Clancy series for this year’s edition of E3? Well, if you did, wrong!
Why? Because we got to see a trailer from “Rainbow Six Quarantine“, where we see a guy shooting at shadows while some parasite crawls up his arm until he is saved by his teammates.
“Rainbow Six Quarantine” will be a test of skills and instinct as you work together with a squad to fight off this unknown parasite.
So maybe if I get better internet I’ll try this out with some friends, but at the moment, I don’t have much interest in it.
Ending the list of Tom Clancy games for this conference, we have “The Division 2“, which will be free to play from the 13th to the 16th, and it’s about to release a major content update where you don’t just save a city, you save the nation.
“The Division 2” is broken down into three parts. Episode 1 has you explore the city outskirts and a zoo to bring a traitor to justice. Episode 2 takes you to the Pentagon, where many secrets lie and you must secure the contents. They also mentioned that the second raid is coming this Fall.
Episode 3 is all about hunting a man with some pretty major influence, but we don’t know who yet. The last thing we hear about the Division is that it’s going to Netflix as a Netflix Original movie.
We’re then introduced to Uplay+ (as if Uplay couldn’t be more laughable), and they have us know that Uplay+ will be $14.99 a month and will give you unlimited access to PC Ubisoft games.
Over 100 games with DLCs will be included, and that includes new games. (Uplay+ is starting in September of this year).
Also in 2020 Uplay+ will be available on Stadia, as if it couldn’t be Dead on Arrival soon enough. Frankly, I wouldn’t waste my money.
Ubisoft has some good games, but they aren’t that great that I’d get this to go with it. Especially not on Stadia.
Other than that, “Roller Champions” made its debut today, appearing to be akin to soccer on skates, but with colorful action and characters. It’s a skill-based team PvP game and it’s available now as a Pre-Alpha demo.
“Roller Champions” seems to be fun, but the kind of fun where you definitely want to be playing this with friends instead of by yourself.
Lastly we got a look at a new IP from the creators of Assassin’s Creed, and that would be “Gods and Monsters“!
Which is a game that has an interesting tagline that when humans need help, they ask for help from the gods, and when gods need help, they enlist the aid of us, followed by a human or Greek god or something taking on a giant demon or monster.
I don’t know about you, but I like the designs and the colors; the only real issue is that we don’t have enough information just yet to make any judgment calls. Nevertheless, I like it and I hope to see more of it soon.
Entertainment Value: 3/5
Games: 3/5
Surprises: 4/5
Verdict: 3.5/5
Ubisoft did pretty well this time around. There was a lot to like and get excited for, but the main issue for me is that it’s way too heavy on the Tom Clancy games.
Sure, maybe that’s just my own problem since I’m sure there are plenty of Tom Clancy fans out there so happy that all those games and content updates and etc. are coming, but for the average person who may or may not have played those games, there’s just so much focus on them.
I was pretty entertained for the most part though and was pretty happy that they managed to delay their dance segment in exchange for some nice music, and I was pretty surprised by the new IPs and Watch Dogs’ focus with all the characters to play as.
So, all in all, Ubisoft did rather good at E3 2019, it’s just for me there was way too much focus on one franchise for me.
