The Wilderness is an area to the northeast of Gielinor. It’s the only place for free players to experience PvP. It contains various towns and locales and it is where you can find skilling and farming opportunities you won’t find anywhere else.

With higher-level skills, whatever else you want to do will be easier, be it farming OSRS gold, skilling, or leveling.

However, the Wilderness is not like the rest of Gielinor. It runs on a different set of rules, rules that you absolutely have to know if you are to survive. So, here is what you need to know.

The Basics

The Wilderness has levels. The Wilderness level determines which players can attack you. For example, if you’re at Wilderness 10, players with combat levels 10 less to 10 more than yours can attack you.

Say you’re at level 100, at Wilderness 10 players level 90-110 can attack you. Some items can get around these restrictions, so be cautious when interacting with others.

Teleportation is blocked past level 20 Wilderness, barring some exceptions. A Teleport Block will still prevent any means of teleportation for 5 minutes, though.

So will any quantity of cursed energy until it’s removed. About nine items will allow instantaneous travel up to level 30 Wilderness:

– Amulet of Glory
– Combat Bracelet
– Grand Seed Pod
– Pharaoh’s Sceptre
– Ring of Life
– Ring of Wealth
– Ring of Fortune
– Luck of the Dwarves
– Skills Necklace
– Wilderness Sword 4

Additionally, some event-only tokens may be used if you have them.

Player or enemy names also get colored depending on how far their combat level is to yours. Green means they have way lower level compared to you. It slowly gets yellower as players get closer to your level.

When it’s fully yellow, it means you’re up against an equal. As they pull away, the name gets redder and redder. Red names mean they’re way above your combat level, so beware!

So it goes green (way lower), yellow-green (lower), yellow (equal), orange (higher), and red (way higher). You might see white names, which indicate you can’t attack them. There are two possible reasons for that: They’re either out of the level range or they’re in a safe zone.

You need to know this so you can decide whether to engage or not. You see, death has a horrible effect in the Wilderness. When you die, you lose all save 3 (4 with a certain prayer, 5 if you’ve eaten a Fury Shark as well) of your items.

With this, you should realize by now that you absolutely have to run from anything with a red name. That is unless you want to take the risk or you have nothing to lose.

Engagement Rules

Now, we go to the rules of engagement. Attacking anyone unprovoked will result in being ‘Skulled’ wherein all your items get dropped (save for the one saved by the prayer). Other players are free to loot your stuff with your killer getting dibs for 10 mins. If a creature was the one who offed you, it’s a free for all from the start!

Be careful because Player Killers have a variety of methods to trick you into Skulling yourself. One, in particular, makes a group hide the original aggressor, which makes them hard to target and hit.

Become frustrated and use an AoE spell? You get skulled because you hit innocent players. Another trick is equipping a piece of gear with the ‘Committed’ perk as they attack with a fun weapon.

That action will cause you to think they skulled on you and are free for retaliation, but you’ll actually get the status if you attack them.

Then there’s also Macing. It’s when a group of players uses the Superior Ancient Mace to drain another’s prayer points. That disables the protection prayer, which adds to their potential pool of loot.

Usually, it happens after a successful skull trick, making the victim drop all their items. You can only run and try to keep your prayer points as high as possible. If you know the boundaries of multiway and single-way combat areas, run to the nearest single-way location.

That way, the perpetrators can’t gang up on you. Don’t eat to keep your prayer points up as that increases the damage you take.

Last Notes

The Wilderness is a treasure trove waiting to be explored for players gutsy enough to take the risk. As you’re always faced with the possibility of losing your hard-earned loot when exploring the area, it’s advised to take mid-tier gear, a few potions, and just enough food for trips to this location.

There are banks in the area, so if you went to farm items, you can stop by to store them. Watch out for events set in the locale, as those are prime PK opportunities. As long as you know what you’re doing, the Wilderness is a great place all kinds of grinding.

Take the plunge into OSRS‘s Wilderness!
