Wesley Snipes could be returning to the Marvel Universe as Blade once again. Snipes recently met with Marvel to discuss his return to the silver screen in a new adaptation of the day walking Vampire hunter. Since Marvel acquired the rights to the series once more a few years back, the fate of Blade as a franchise has been up in the air ever since.
Snipes recently sat with Deadline in an interview about his new series The Player, and was asked about the role. When asked, Snipes had this to say: “[Blade 4] is controlled by Marvel and we did have a really productive and a wonderful meeting and we discussed a number of things. I don’t know where it’s on their schedule at this point, that hasn’t been decided. I guess it’s still up in the air.”
On the subject of Blade possibly becoming its own series in line with the “Midnight Sons” characters such as Ghost Rider, Snipes seemed very optimistic. “I’ve always been a fan of these pieces and adaptations and I’d be nice to be a part of the family again. But if we don’t to a Blade 4 or something else with Marvel, we’ll do something else.” The last time we saw Snipes suit up as Blade was over 11 years ago back in 2004 with Blade Trinity. While that movie heavily underperformed in the ratings, it did cement a few good facts in fans hearts and minds. For starters, Marvel was very loose with their control over the characters development and his production value. For another The stories were always centered over ambiguous plots involving Vampires evolving—or even Dracula coming back to fight Blade.
If Marvel does the franchise correctly, we’ll see something in the realm of The Suicide Squad created—that is to say—a singular series that isn’t centered on a major franchise like X-Men. The expectation to blow up wouldn’t be necessary and it would just continue the revenue stream Marvel has created with X-Men First Class. On the other side of things Daredevil has already garnered a lot of attention for Marvel being a Netflix exclusive, offering an entire season for $8.00/Mo to watch at your leisure. The production value, and quality are top-notch, and Blade could find a more than stable home there. We could even see several team ups or crossovers similar to Arrow, and The Flash.
We do have an entire new year to look forward to starting in 2016, and with shows like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D leading the way, name drops, cameos, or hints build suspense—and that leads to movies, sequels and more territory at the box office and theatres. Give us your thoughts on if you want to see a new Blade, or just a continuation of the comic in the comments!
