Day 1 ends in blazing fashion: 3 BO3, 135 minutes. The fastest day ever in competitive Dota 2.
The Summit 3 kicked off May 13th with VG vs RAVE, and it was a 2:0 stomp from VG. The Chinese team outdrafted RAVE, winning Game 1 in 27:30 and Game 2 in 20:00. As Jeyo said in his HotBid interview, he felt that VG were on another level, and that scrimming against them was nothing but a learning experience.
Team Performances
VG, as Dota 2 commentator “Godz” said in the Summit 3 introduction panel candidly, is a team that is ever-ready. Despite their loss to Empire at D2CL, it seems to be but a minor setback for the number 1 team in the world. No team is impervious to losses, and VG has definitely recovered from their setback, absolutely crushing a victorious Cloud 9 2:0 in just under 20:20 in Game 1, and 14:10 in Game 2. They have secured their place in the winner’s bracket of the playoffs on 15th May, and they look primed to dominate the competition.
C9 beat EG convincingly, winning Game 1 in 17:38 and Game 2 in 36:47. C9, traditionally winning in extended games, seem to be warming up to the faster metagame, drafting aggressive supports like Keeper of the Light and Chen. Their aggression could not handle VG, however, their otherwise successful Dragon Knight did not produce results against Super’s Alchemist and Hao’s Leshrac, ending the game with only 1 kill. This is EG’s first ever official 6.84 game, and a loss to C9 sets up their rivalry going towards Ti 5.
RAVE’s chance to prove themselves against VG ended in a 2:0 tragedy; became a source of pressure which caused them to crumble instead of giving them a competitive edge. The Summit 3’s introduction panel focused on this fact. (Team MY invited over RAVE)They needed to prove everyone else they were more deserving than Team Malaysia, and I felt that they made plays that were overtly risky as a result. Purge, on the Summit 3 introduction, pegged RAVE’s lack of an invite as a result of a dearth of recent performances, rather than their own previous accomplishments.
