(Warning: minor spoilers for Fallout 3)
Many scenes in the Fallout 4 trailer, like the appearance of the Paul Revere statue, confirms what fans have suspected for years, the game will take place in Boston, rumors started to go around when it was heard that Bethesda employees had been scouting locations there, also a leaked document that mentioned “The Institute” which is a location briefly mentioned in Fallout 3 by a character called Dr. Zimmer.
“The Commonwealth itself is nothing but a war-ravaged quagmire of violence and despair. Inside the sealed environment of the Institute, however… The Institute’s affairs are none of your concern. Your undeveloped mind couldn’t even begin to comprehend what we’ve accomplished.” – Dr. Zimmer
In a 1UP interview with Designer/Writer Emil Pagliarulo 7 years ago it was revealed that the Commonwealth is indeed located in Boston Massachusetts
“1UP: Would that new region/expansion be the Commonwealth — is the Commonwealth the Fallout 3 version of Boston?
EP: Oh, and no — no current plan to visit the Commonwealth, which is indeed Massachusetts: Home sweet home for me! Go Southie!”
Fallout meets Blade Runner?
Now that we know that Fallout 4 is most likely takes place in the Commonwealth, we can assume we’ll see more of the faction known as The Institute, which might be the most scientifically advanced faction in the Fallout universe since they’ve been able to create true Artificial Intelligence, and Manufacture androids, we might also see more of the organization known as The Railroad which is opposed to the institute, these groups were briefly mentioned in Fallout 3 where we also meet 2 android characters now that we’ll be visiting the place from where those androids came from, we might bump into a lot more of them.
