This came as no surprise to anyone. As it was quite obvious that Nintendo would have to join the mobile market at one point or another. As they need it in order to survive, and to stay ahead of the competition.
As the mobile market keeps on growing and stealing market shares from Nintendo. This is nothing new though. But it´s been getting worse and worse over time.
And i remember reading a really good article about this subject last summer (i think it was Level whom wrote that article).
The article basically said that this (the part about Nintendo going mobile) was an inevitable situation, and that Nintendo would be forced to go mobile sooner or later.
Simply because Nintendo can´t keep on losing money and market shares forever. So when i heard that Nintendo had signed a partnership deal with DeNA (a Japanese mobile portal provider).
I just knew that video game history is being written here and now.
Because Nintendo has never EVER released any of their games to smartphones and tablets before. But that´s just about to change.
But this change brings a lot of questions to the table as well. Questions such as “Will Nintendo continue to develop new consoles?” and “What will happen to Nintendos home and mobile consoles now?”.
Well, as it turns out. Nintendo won´t be leaving those markets anytime soon. As Mr. Miyamoto is hard at work with a handful of Wii U titles that´s set for a launch this year (“The Legend of Zelda” for example).
And as you probarly already know by now. Nintendo announced a brand new console during the Ltd. Business and Capital Alliance event just recently (it´s called “Nintendo NX“). There´s very little known about “Nintendo NX” though.
And it seems like Nintendo won´t say anything more about their new console until sometime next year (according to the interview that they did with Time).
This is what´s known about the “Nintendo NX” at this time though:
– Iwata Says That “NX” is a “Brand New Concept”
– “NX” Is Just a Codename (no kidding?)
– The “Nintendo NX” console will be a 100% “Dedicated Game System”
– Nintendo is partnering with Japanese mobile gaming company DeNA (Nintendo will use that DeNA partnership to the max for the “NX” console for sure)
But if we focus on what we know for now. The deal with DeNa means that we will be able to play Zelda, Mario, Donkey Kong and other famous Nintendo IP´s on our smart phone and tablet in the near future.
That´s great news for sure. But Nintendo must think all of this through very carefully, or else they might end up in a situation where their own products compete against each other (Nintendo games on Nintendo formats Vs Nintendo games on other formats).
But “if” Nintendo plays out their cards right, they might actually reach out to people that never had any thoughts on buying a Nintendo console before (or even a Nintendo game for that matter).
And if that´s the case, then there might be a brand new golden dawn for Nintendo in terms of marketshares and new consumers. In the worst-case scenario however.
Nintendo might end up losing both customers and marketshares do to similar competing products on other formats.
This whole situation actually made me think about that time Apple had so many products on the market, that they competed against each other (Steve Jobs changed all of that when he came back to Apple after that he got fired).
And before i wrap this up. It seems like “The Legend of Zelda” might be one of the last AAA titles to be released for the Wii U. At least that´s the rumor on the street right now.
And it doesn’t seem to be that unlikely when you think about it. As Nintendo might release the “NX” console sometime next year.
So what do you guys think about Nintendos upcoming “NX Console”? And the fact that Nintendo will start to release their games to smartphones and tablets?
