Sexy time, the extreme edition
To be honest, I don´t think that Nintendo (or Intelligent Systems) will have to do all that much PR for Fire Emblem Fates, as the game has already made headlines all over the world as of lately. I mean, first it was the same-sex marriages, and now it´s been reviled that you can talk dirty, touch and strip down your characters in Fire Emblem Fates. This of course made me wonder if any of these XXX features will exist in the Western version of the game? Especially due to the fact that some of the female characters in the game look really young (Lolita complex to the max?). Just take the case with Dead or Alive: Dimension, that game got banned in Sweden (the game is not sold in Norway or Denmark either) because of the Swedish Child porn law. So who knows? Fire Emblem Fates might face the very same fate as well.
As for now, it´s somewhat unclear if the Western version of Fire Emblem Fates will even feature the same XXX content as its Japanese counterpart. Speaking of which, these are some of the naughty dialogs that exist in the Japanese version of the game (a handful of users on Reddit managed to translate some of the “mature” dialogs from Fire Emblem Fates):
Lazwald: “I also want to touch you, will you come closer?”
Joker: “We can’t… it’ll have to wait for tonight.”
Camilla: “The way you’re using your hand feels so good. Very skillful.”
Takumi: “You can touch me wherever I like, but don’t say I didn’t warn you…”
Camilla: “When you do it this much, it’s embarrassing…”
Fire Emblem Fates gets down-and-dirty
Yes, I know what you´re thinking right now. And no, you can NOT touch any “vital” parts of the characters in the game. However, you can indeed strip down people until they just stand in their underwear (male and female alike). Not only that, you can also touch and stroke your character’s body (ehrm…yeah). However, you will only be able to do this when you’re buying items at the accessory shop though (darn!), but when you do so, you can rotate the in-game camera around the character in question’s body as you please. So it seems like you will be able to get down-and-dirty if your character archive an S-rank relationship with another character in Fire Emblem Fates.
I´m perfectly fine with that, since we´re all adults after all (I hope), but I can´t say that I dig the “incest vibes” in Fire Emblem Fates. As the dialogues can be of sexual nature between siblings in the game. So I’m rather curious to find out how much of this stuff that will be removed from the EU/US version of Fire Emblem Fates once it gets released sometime next year (the Japanese version was released on the 25th of June).

***Update 1 – 2015-06-26 – 18:53 CEST***
I just wanted to point out that I was wrong about Tomodachi Life and Nintendo adding same-sex relations to the game, because they never did that. In fact, this is what Nintendo said about the matter back in May last year:
“We are committed to advancing our longtime company values of fun and entertainment for everyone,”. “We pledge that if we create a next installment in the ‘Tomodachi’ series, we will strive to design a game-play experience from the ground up that is more inclusive, and better represents all players.” – Nintendo
An answer which Sarah Kate (CEO GLAAD) responded to like this:
“Nintendo has taken a first step, but if the company’s longtime values are rooted in `fun and entertainment for everyone,’ then it needs to catch up to peers like Electronic Arts, which has been inclusive of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) gamers for years,” – GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis
So I’m sorry about this (my bad), I honestly thought that Nintendo would add same-sex couples to Tomodachi Life later on. Well, I was wrong. As that´s a feature that Nintendo “might,” add in the Tomodachi Life sequel. That remains to be seen, however, since there´s no word about a Tomodachi Life 2 just yet.

Nintendo´s attempt to flirt with the gay Gamer community
First of all, I want to make it absolutely clear that I’m 100% cool with the fact that Nintendo (and Intelligent Systems) has added same-sex marriages to Fire Emblem Fates (I’m not a homophobe), with that said. Please allow me to share my thoughts and opinions about this matter, since the SJW´s has once again brought a dark cloud over a beloved game (that´s why there´s a lot of angry rants on the web at the moment). It´s of course great news that you will be able to marry someone of your same-sex (you will even be able to raise children as well) in Fire Emblem Fates (Nintendo added this feature to Tomodachi Life as well, after rants from media and the gay community), but it´s rather sad and tragic that the SJW´s have brought in tokenism and biological essentialism into the mix.
Same-sex marriages Vs tokenism and biological essentialism
As it has absolutely NOTHING to do with the fact that Fire Emblem Fates will offer same-sex marriages (it just casts a shadow over the good news imo), secondly it´s pretty much impossible to represent and add every single minority group to the game. Sure, I have not played all the Fire Emblem games in the series, but the series is heavily inspired by Japanese culture and traditions (Fire Emblem Fates is said to be inspired by Western culture, however). My point is this. Most of the Fire Emblem characters is either of Asian origin or of a non human race, I´m not saying that Intelligent Systems (and Nintendo) shouldn´t add characters of different colors to Fire Emblem Fates (Final Fantasy has a handful of black characters, for example).
No, I´m saying that it´s really hard to represent all minority groups there is in one single game, and still manage remain truthful to the game’s universe (especially if it´s a game with an authentic historical background story and theme). It´s simply too much to ask for I think. Sure, the developer (s) could of course add new characters from different ethical backgrounds (and races) via download services later on. That would also give the developer an honest chance to create a believable background story for the character (s) in question (so that the character (s) won´t feel misplaced in the game’s universe).
So that´s what I had to say on this matter, and this is what Nintendo had to say about the same-sex marriages in Fire Emblem Fates:
Nintendo’s statement
“We can confirm that Fire Emblem Fates for Nintendo 3DS, which launches in Japan on June 25, 2015, and is coming to the U.S. and Europe in 2016, includes the possibility for a same-sex marriage to take place between the main character created by the gamer and another character in the game.”
“Fire Emblem Fates comes in two different versions, called the Conquest and Birthright editions. In the U.S., Conquest and Birthright will both be sold separately, as is already the case in Japan. For those who have purchased either the Conquest or Birthright edition, a third edition will be made available as downloadable content at a later stage. Details on how the three storylines will be made available in other regions will be announced at a later date. In the Conquest edition of the game, there is a male character that the game’s player may have his/her male main character marry after they bond in battle. Similarly, the Birthright edition features a female character that a female main character may marry after bonding in battle. Both of the aforementioned characters can be encountered in the third edition of the game.”
“We believe that our gameplay experiences should reflect the diversity of the communities in which we operate and, at the same time, we will always design the game specifications of each title by considering a variety of factors, such as the game’s scenario and the nature of the game play. In the end of course, the game should be fun to play. We feel that Fire Emblem Fates is indeed enjoyable to play and we hope fans like the game.” – Via Nintendoeverything
With that said, what do you guys and girls think about all of this? And are you excited for Fire Emblem Fates? (the game got released in Japan today, Europa and the US will have to wait until next year sometime).
