Comcept Inti Creates and Deep Silver has finally dropped an official trailer for”Mighty no. 9″, and it will “make you cry like an anime fan on prom night.”(in a really bad way). And unfortunately enough for Deep Silver and Comcept studios, the MN9 trailer honestly didn’t provide much for the avid fan of the game (besides tons of frustration and confusion). However, on the upside, if you’re a fan of 90’s teen PS2 games. Then the trailer will be right in line with late “Megaman” games for the PsOne.
The downside is that after almost $3 million and change being sunk into a game that took over three years to secure. A solid release date its unacceptable to backers, and will probably go down as Keiji Inafune’s greatest failure. From Comcept’s community manager refusing refunds, to apparent server issues that plagued the games’ online connectivity for fans–“Mighty no. 9” have been through it all, and it’s not over yet. The biggest disappointment about the title so far is that it will be on next-gen consoles with PS2 graphics and a retro style of gameplay that doesn’t look as if it’s really been overhauled.
As for the backers of Might no. 9 who didn’t seek refunds after the first few set backs, the old adage is true–you will always get what you pay for.
***Second opinion by Robin Ek***
I´m going to admit right away that I was pretty excited when I first heard about Keiji Inafune and Comcept Inti Creates “Mighty no. 9” Kickstarter campaign. However, this was back in September, 2013 (the “Mighty no. 9” Kickstarter campaign launched on the 1st of September). And it´s now the 26th of May, 2016. And during that period from 2013 to the present date, it really was a roller coaster of anger, disappointment and frustration for me (which mainly was due to all the delays). As I´m a big fan of Keiji Inafune´s “Megaman” series. And I really thought that I (and other fans) would get to experience a true and awesome spiritual “Megaman” gameplay experience. Well, those dreams went up in smoke last night when I watched Deep Silvers “Mighty No. 9” trailer.
Well, right of the bat, Deep Silver´s “Mighty No. 9” trailer looks beyond terrible. In the matter of fact, I´ve seen PS2 games that look better than the MN9 trailer. And just the mere thought of the 3.8 million dollars via Kickstarter (plus all the delays and a three-year development cycle on top of that), makes my blood boil. So it´s no wonder why a lot of the Kickstarter backers (67,226 people backed MN9 on Kickstarter) are really angry and disappointed with MN9 (just check all the Youtube and Reddit comments…). And all that anger resulted in Deep Silver getting almost 14,000 dislikes on their MN9 Youtube trailer, in less than 48 hours (that has to be some kind of a world record?).
And as if that wasn´t bad enough, MN9 might actually have killed off the chance of us ever seeing a new Capcom made “Megaman” game. As the MN9 project has been one big drama circus from the very start. There are also a rising anger and distrust growing among Gamers when it comes to crowd founding platforms such as Kickstarter. And MN9 has just put even more fuel on that fire of distrust. And in my opinion, MN9 is bad news for everyone (Gamers, indie developers, publishers and all the crowdfunding platforms on the market).
Because the bond of trust has been broken big time with MN9, and I´m not quite sure if the damage can be repaired. You know, quite frankly. I don´t think that the game crowd founding market will be able to take many more MN9 fiascos. As it feels like the crowd founding bubble might burst any day now. I mean, the whole crowd founding market is built up on trust between the game developer, and his or her backers and fans. So when there is no trust to be found anymore, then it´s Game Over for real…
I would also like to point out that there are indie game developers who have created better looking games (and trailers) for 1/10 of “Mighty No.9´s” Kickstarter budget (like Nowhere Studios “Monochroma“, for example). And that makes one wonder what Keiji Inafune and Comcept Inti Creates has done with those 3.8 million USD which they received via Kickstarter? Simply put, what have they spent all that cash on? As 3.8 million dollars are a whole lot of money. So as you might imagine, I´m most likely not the only person out there who´s curious to find out the truth behind the development costs for MN9.
Especially since the game is set for a release on the 21st of June this summer (for Windows, Linux, MAC, PS3, PS4, 360, Xbox One, Wii U, 3DS and PSV). Because if the MN9 trailer looked this bad, then I´m somewhat afraid of what might await us in the full version of MN9. And I guess that you have already seen all the jokes about the 3DS version of MN9? Well, if you haven´t. Then you will probably see a lot of comments such as this on Youtube and social media: “If MN9 looks this bad on console and PC, then I don´t even want to know what the 3DS version will look like…”.
Even so, I think it´s safe to say that Takuya Aizu (Comcept Inti Creates CEO) put the final nail in the coffin with his angry tweet (as seen above) about Deep Silver´s MN9 Youtube trailer:
“What the hell was D*** Sil*** thinking making a crappy PV like this?! Unforgivable” – Takuya Aizu, CEO Comcept Inti Creates.
And as awful as all of this already sound and looks, I actually have one more thing that I would like to add to this matter. I agree with Takuya Aizu and the MN9 backers that the Youtube trailer looks really, really bad (with no doubt whatsoever). However, the one million-dollar question would be how dreadful the final production of MN9 will look? And how terrible (or good) the game will be on release? That is what´s on my mind right now, because let´s say that the trailer truly reflects how bad MN9 really looks as a whole. Then no trailer in the whole world will be able to save MN9 from a very terrible launch fiasco.
