The previous “Pokemon Sun” and “Pokemon Moon” news on June 2nd gave us some things to be excited for this November (my excited personally for the Rotom Pokedex). And now that we know a bit more about our legendaries for the upcoming Generation 7 (which in-between articles, I’ve found a video which theorizes that Solgaleo is based on the “Lion Eating the Sun” from Alchemy texts) we get to see the trend of giving one a new form once more. As it was announced in a CoroCoro magazine, Zygarde will be getting new formes for both the XY & Z arc of the Pokémon main anime and, with a brand-new trailer confirming it, in the new games.
From what I read the Zygarde formes is a bit more complicated than previous ones, such as The Forces of Nature’s (Landorus, Tornadus, and Thundurus) Therian Formes (animal based) or Giratina’s Origin Forme. For a quick recap of the Pokemon (or for those of you, who are going to start playing Pokemon with Generation 7) let’s take a look at its Pokedex entries from “Pokemon X” and “Pokemon Y”.
X & Y Pokedex Entries (Respectively): “When the Kalos region’s ecosystem falls into disarray, it appears and reveals its secret power. It’s hypthesized that it’s monitoring those who destory the ecosystem from deep in the cave (Terminus Cave) where it lives.”
Zygarde is the order Pokemon that is found in both “Pokemon X“ and “Pokemon Y” (with a recent event that allowed players owning one on “Pokémon OmegaRuby” and “Pokemon AlphaSapphire” outside of trading and the “Pokemon Bank”). This Zygarde (Generation 6) is in a state referred to as Zygarde 50% Forme. In the trailer, we were introduced to its two other forms: Zygarde 10% Forme and Zygarde Complete Forme. While these are not the most creative names for the Pokemon’s stages, it does show that there’s a bit more to Zygarde. As it is more complicated compared to the other Pokemon´s, that relies on either an item or a Mega Stone to change outside of normal evolution.
There are two other forms that are tied in with Zygarde. Core Zygarde is a small Pokemon that is considered to be the mind of the legendary, much like the soul to a body or a pilot to a mobile suit. Then there are the Zygarde Cells which make up the Pokemon’s body around the Core. The Cells are not necessarily Pokemon themselves (at least I don’t believe so) since they are more of a component to the main body, and they are unable to use any moves themselves.
The new trailer shows off the 10% and complete formes for Zygarde along with a few moves, two of which (Thousand Arrows and Thousands Waves) are Zygarade’s signature moves. It’s possible that Zygarde 10% will be a separate Pokemon which can be caught in Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon and I think it’s a safe bet that Zygarde complete will act as it’s Mega Evolution. Activating its Mega Evolution doesn’t traditionally use a Mega Stone. However, it’s not as bad as just knowing a move like Rayquaza. From what I understand when Zygarde 10% enters low HP its ability (Swam Change) activates and changes into its Complete Forme. I’m sure this will count as a Mega Evolution in battle (since you can only activate one per battle) but this actually makes it more a hardcore fighter than another Mega Rayquaza.
Personally, I think this is a neat idea. I mean, if Zygarde 50% isn’t the strongest in terms of base stats, then Zygarde 10% (presumably nerfed compared to 50%) could be one a legendary that no one will have any guilt having on their battle team. And while Zygarde Complete is supposed to surpass Xerneas and Yveltal in power. The Mega Mewtwo forms still take the top ranking. So I don’t think it´s a matter of a final form in this case, and that it won’t be more OP than the Genetic Pokemon.
As for aesthetics, I think Zygarde has a lot of bases covered. The Core is simple and oddly cute to a point where it needs its own plushie. But then we move into Zygarde 10%, a radical looking canine that might be able to compete with Dog Meat (whom is immortal in Fallout 4 from what I understand). And it keeps the cool hexagonal design, which makes it looks like the demonic cousin of Houndoom (though I think Houndoom can be the Baron of Hell in the relationship). Of course, we can’t forget Zygarde 50% since we’ve been seeing that since “Pokemon X” and “Pokemon Y”.
It looks just as cool as it does now, having a sort of lighthearted Lovecraftian feel to it with its serpent form. And finally there’s Zygarde complete, and I’m wondering how it can go from serpent to Mega Zord (though I’m not complaining). Complete has both blue and red worked into its color scheme, which makes sense since it’s supposed to be stronger than the XY’s other legendaries. Its hexagonal design makes it look like an Eastern mech (my inner child nerds out when I take a closer look at it). However, I wish the overall form was bigger because it looks like its ready for a Kaiju battle. No wonder it’s called the Order Pokemon, it wants to be Voltron.
And that’s all I have to say on Zygarde, for the time being. And besides that I’m ready for a Kaiju beat down when I catch it (technically again) on “Pokemon Moon”. Train on.
