Composers Cody Carpenter and Mark Day team up for driving electronic/chiptune hybrid soundtrack inspired by 8- and 16-bit RPGs.

Press release:
SAN DIEGO – April 17, 2018 – Scarlet Moon Records is pleased to present Shadow Spirits Vol. 1, an explosive electronic/chiptune soundtrack experience by electronic artists Cody Carpenter and Mark Day. Shadow Spirits Vol. 1 features all original music that is heavily inspired by classic 8- and 16-bit RPGs, weaving its own musical tale through pumping battle tracks, jovial town themes, and heart-rending emotional cues that follow a young samurai’s journey. Shadow Spirits Vol. 1 is now available for pre-order and will be available wherever digital music is sold starting on April 24, 2018:

“Initially we were going to do a 4 track EP,” explains Mark Day. “But the tracks came out so well we decided a full album would be better. I suggested a classic RPG concept as I love the music of Nobuo Uematsu and Hiroki Kikuta and had recently played Final Fantasy VII. I arranged Cody’s pieces along with the pieces I had written using the Commodore SID chip for most sounds and a little Juno 106 here and there for warmth.”

“I wrote the original versions of these tracks exclusively with the NES chipset,” adds Cody Carpenter. “I then passed it over to Mark to arrange into the finished product. We were both inspired by classic game music, with myself also taking a lot of inspiration from the work of Vince DiCola.”

About Cody Carpenter
Cody Carpenter is a third generation musician. His father, John Carpenter, is a director and composer and his mother, Adrienne Barbeau, is a star of film, television and the Broadway stage. His grandfather, Howard Carpenter, was a founding member of the Nashville Strings.

Cody was introduced to his first musical instrument around the age of three and has been playing and composing original music since. In addition to contributing music for two of his father’s films, Vampires (1998) and Ghosts of Mars (2001), Carpenter composed and performed the full-length score for “Cigarette Burns” and “Pro-Life” in Showtime’s Masters of Horror (2005) movie series.

Cody co-wrote, co-produced, and performed on the acclaimed Lost Themes (2015) and Lost Themes II (2016) with his father and Daniel Davies. In 2016 and 2017 Cody toured North America and Europe with his father and a 6-piece band, performing material from both Lost Themes albums and his father’s films.
