Press release:
SUNNYVALE, CA – June 7, 2023.
“Yomi 2“, the sequel to the first “fighting card game” from “Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix” and “Fantasy Strike” lead designer David Sirlin, command grabs the attention of both fighting and trading card game communities when it launches in Early Access for PC, Mac, and Steam Deck on Steam and Epic Games Store on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, as revealed today at the Guerrilla Collective showcase.
Play a demo starting Monday, June 12, ahead of the game’s presence in Steam Next Fest.
Compete in a brand new competitive environment built from the ground up to highlight the tension of taking turns. Explore the same familiar rules of fighting games with combos, frame advantage, attack priority, and more in card game form.
Learn a deck of cards like any other fighting game character’s kit, then utilize those tools to deal an unpredictable string of tracks, blocks, throws, dashes, and special moves to cut through the other fighter.
Read the opponent’s moves and habits to stuff their attempts to gain momentum and retaliate with offense fueled by various fighting systems. Use standing blocks to ward off high attacks, crouch block lows, negate throw attempts, and prevent zoner characters from building up their hand size while they establish space with distant fireballs.
Land enough combos to build up a super meter then capitalize with a cinematic, animated high-damage finisher.
Pick from a roster of nine characters at the Early Access launch, with more planned, augmenting their special moves with a choice of one of six gems that can unleash a flurry of attacks that shift momentum in an instant.
Build up skills offline with the single-player Career mode where you try to become the best Yomi player in the city and participate in tournaments against hundreds of colorful, artificial personalities. Train mechanics with the combo practice mode, or just engage in one-off versus CPU matches.
Then, put those skills to the test in multiplayer modes, available online with ranked and casual play, or locally with pass-and-play. Online play will feature synchronous multiplayer, where each person takes their turn and watches their opponent play theirs. Asynchronous multiplayer, where opponents can play their turn and jump into other matches while waiting for the next turn, will launch later in Early Access.
Yomi 2’s Early Access serves not just as a way to finalize the digital game, but will also serve as a way to develop out and balance what will eventually become a tabletop card game with the same rules and mechanics as the digital version.
“It’s difficult to update the balance of a physical card game after its release. So we’re using the digital version of Yomi 2 and Early Access to build out the game and its content, taking in mind feedback from everyone,” said David Sirlin, President and Founder, Sirlin Games.
“Then, once we feel the game has been sharpened and balanced, we’ll ship the finalized card game along with the fully-formed digital version.”
Yomi 2 launches on Early Access for PC, Mac, and Steam Deck Tuesday, June 27 on Steam and Epic Games Store for $24.99. A demo will premiere as part of Steam Next Fest on Monday, June 19 at 10:00 AM PDT. For more information on Yomi 2, follow developer Sirlin Games on Twitter.
