A gamers worst nightmare is probably losing power. Without electricity, we can’t start up our nifty consoles and gaming computers. In “TurnOn” we are dealing with a massive power outage in the city, and it’s up to us to restore it. Brainy Studio brings us a cute platformer, which isn’t really like any other platformer. You’re a little blue and white ball of electricity from outer space, and you’re here to help Professor Brain restore the power in the city.
You’ll be moving through power lines throughout the city, while turning on lights and other electrical devices and collecting blue lightning bolt icons. This part of the game is rather straight forward and easy, but it’s also challenging to collect all icons and turn on all the lights in a level. You sometimes have to solve little mini puzzles to progress in the game.
In between normal city levels, you’ll get mini levels where you jump up and down between power cables while automatically sliding forward. This is where the game gets a bit more tricky! Timing and paying attention to the cables is key. You’ll be avoiding red lightning bolt icons to prevent death and collecting green (to restore lives) and blue lightning bolt icons on the go. The checkpoints are sparse, so falling down or dying is (of course) best to be avoided. You have three lives and falling down doesn’t count as losing a life, it’s mostly just annoying.
You don’t really have enemies in the game other than falling down or grabbing the red lightning bolt icons. There is a part where you have to avoid a drone, and a part where you avoid “another” kind of electricity (the bad kind). Other than that there aren’t any tiny bad guys or a big bad guy in the game. I really loved the art style and music in this game. The art has its own unique look. It’s kind of cartoony but also has a wonderful atmospheric vibe to it, with all the lights coming on. The music switches between jazzy and funky music, but it also has some gorgeous piano and guitar pieces in the mini levels.
In overall, I very much enjoyed “TurnOn”. As It’s cute, not too difficult and the game offers a fun little story as well. It’s a game you can play if you want to chill with something that’s not too tough on the brain, while also challenging you a bit more at times.
Pros:
+ Nice music
+ Pretty art style
+ Cute story
Cons:
– Not much of a challenge for most people
– Some tiny bugs where you go off the power cables and fly in midair at some points
