Team 17 have been at the helm of worm warfare for years. And I will never ever forget playing the original classic on PS1. As I was setting up teams of four with AI and trying to outlast them while blowing the maps to bits, all while hearing the comical one-liners from the little pixelated critters. And now, two decades (and countless sequels and spin-offs) later. “Worms W.M.D” looks to be the most perfected wormy warfare game to date, the perfect time to reawaken Wormy nostalgia!

worms wmd buildings

You can now take cover in buildings, and it will remain yours until someone’s blown them up.

And as with every new “Worms” game, brand-new additions are a guarantee. So, yeah, “Worms W.M.D.” sure isn´t any exception. As the game is jam-packed full of content. And that includes everything from single player modes and challenge maps, crafting, more weapons to customization options for your worms. Furthermore, there is a pre-order pack as well. And it features items from games like “PayDay 2“, “Goat Simulator“, “Broforce” and more. You can also have epic battles with eight Worms per team. Which make for some incredibly comical moments as their little bodies go flying after a well-placed Holy Hand Grenade. The battlefields aren’t just littered with obstacles anymore, there’s a variety of vehicles and weapon placements you can commandeer such as Gun Nests, Tanks, Helicopters, even a car from “Rocket League“! These can be used to your advantage, whether it’s bombarding enemy placements or increasing your worm’s survivability.

Level the Odds with the help of a tank.

There’ is even a brand-new crafting option. So yes, you guess it. You create very powerful variations of your weaponry in “Worms W.M.D.”. And to do this you have a small stockpile of resources that can be used to create extra dominant weapons to smite your opposition. Furthermore, there is also a trade-off feature to be found in the game. And allows you to acquire more resources by dismantling some of your arsenal. And means that you could build some WMD’s to wreak total havoc on your foes. And trust me, when you call in something like “Armageddon“, then all hell breaks loose! Of course, fan favourites return such as the exploding sheep and infamous Banana bomb, along with new comers such as the Dubstep Gun and Psychopathic Goat from “Goat simulator” (which is available as a pre-order bonus).

worms wmd crafting skills

You can also craft different kinds of weapons and whatnot by collecting ingredients from crates.

Team 17 has dialled things back for the single player. And even though I never cared all that much for the narrator from the previous outing, I quite enjoyed that aspect of “Worms W.M.D”. And this time around, the campaign and challenge maps are just straight-up battles with various optional challenges topped off with online leader boards (which allows you to track your progress against your friends). The main meat of the game is in the local Co-Op and online modes. Local Co-Op stands out as a personal favorite of mine, since you can edit matches to your liking (whether it’s against A.I or your buddies).

And a nice bonus is that it doesn’t matter if you don’t have enough controllers or not, as you can simply pass your controller around. Gameplay has also been revised (which is more like the classic “Worms” game that we all know and love). Team 17 have truly done everything they could do to perfect their work, and they really have delivered the best possible version of “Worms”.

worms wmd carpet bombing

Yes, the carpet bombs are back again.

There aren’t any major issues that i’ve noticed while playing. As things blow-up like they should, and the worms comically fly off the map after being hit. However, the most glaring issue would be the repetition of some voice lines, while as comical as they are, hearing the same voice line over and over can begin to grate. I found myself switching voice lines after each match. There’s also a variety of unlockable content as you rank up. Nevertheless, it is a little lacking, and I do feel a few things are missing (in all honesty Team 17, where is the Schwarzenegger voice pack?) Still the victory themes you earn are top-notch!

“Worms W.M.D ” does what “Worms” does best, warfare and carnage in glorious 2D graphics. The new features such as Vehicles and crafting are a welcome addition. It’s worms. It does what you expect it to do. However, I’m not too sure where Team 17 will go from here. As they have perfected their worm warfare craft. I mean, “Worms W.M.D” is without a doubt the most explosive “Worms” title yet. And it will certainly entertain veterans and newcomers alike.

Pros:
+ Addictive Gameplay
+ Decent new features
+ Great Multi-player

Cons:
– No Schwarzenegger voice pack
– Repetitive voice lines

Gameplay: 5/5
Graphics: 4/5
Sound/music: 4/5
