We haven´t written an update about Microsoft’s (last?) upcoming OS Windows since March this year. So it feels like it´s about time that we drop a new update on Windows 10, especially since Microsoft has revealed some new information about Win 10 just recently. Like the fact that Win 10 might be the last Windows OS ever. Because according to Microsoft the future is “Windows as a service”, and not new Windows editions with a new number attached to it. In other words, Microsoft intend to keep Windows 10 alive forever via online updates.
That sounds like a really ambitious goal for sure. But at this time Microsoft can´t explain who they intend to achieve that goal. Then you got the part about Windows 10 coming in seven different editions (Home, Pro, Enterprise, Education, Mobile, Mobile Enterprise, LoT Core). And each and every one of those editions are aimed at specific consumer group (all editions of Win 10 will be shipped with DirectX 12 and WDDM 2.0 though).
Nice, i just hope that the Windows 10 release will be less confusing then the Windows 7 release (there were so many different kinds if Win 7 editions, that it caused confusion among both retailers and customers). Time will tell. Anyhow, the biggest news of the day would be Phil Spencer´s (head of Microsoft’s Xbox division and Microsoft Studios) announcement that the Windows 10 beta is coming to Xbox One sometime this summer.
And that announcement has made the whole Xbox community to speculate about the possibility of a full release of Windows 10 to Xbox One, and that lead to speculations about Valve releasing their Steam client for Xbox One.
If all of this turns out to be true. Then there´s a rather bright future waiting just around the corner for the Xbox One for sure (IF Microsoft plays out their cards right that is). And the main goal for Windows 10 (and Microsoft) would be to unify Xbox One, Windows Phone and Windows PC under the same umbrella (Windows 10).
But for now, please enjoy Windows Central´s “Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10122 hands-on” video!
“Right now we’re releasing Windows 10, and because Windows 10 is the last version of Windows, we’re all still working on Windows 10.” – Jerry Nixon
“We aren’t speaking to future branding at this time, but customers can be confident Windows 10 will remain up-to-date and power a variety of devices from PCs to phones to Surface Hub to HoloLens and Xbox. We look forward to a long future of Windows innovations.” – Said a Microsoft spokesperson to The Verge
