The beginning of the end, and the rebirth of a mass murderer anti-hero

I still remember when i wrote my very first article about Destructive Creations ultra violent mass murder simulator “Hatred“. It was back in December last year, and the article is called “Valve removes the controversial game Hatred from Greenlight“. Why? Because there was a lot of fuss before (and after) that i wrote that article. At that time, people were really angry that Valve removed “Hatred” from Steam Greenlight (Hatred even had 93% up-vote score when Valve removed the game from Steam).

So Gamers ranted about “censorship” and “political correctness” all over the world for days, and eventually even Gabe Newell himself had to speak up about Valves decision to remove “Hatred” from Steam Greenlight. In the matter of fact, Gabe Newell actually apologized to Destructive Creations for Valve´s action against “Hatred”, and this is what Newell said back in December last year:

“Hi, Jaroslaw,

Yesterday I heard that we were taking Hatred down from Greenlight. Since I wasn’t up to speed, I asked around internally to find out why we had done that. It turns out that it wasn’t a good decision, and we’ll be putting Hatred back up. My apologies to you and your team. Steam is about creating tools for content creators and customers.

Good luck with your game Gabe”Gabe Newell , CEO Valve

hatred murder

When it comes to gore, violence and slaughter. “Hatred” tops “Postal” imo.

Welcome home (again) you hateful bastard!

In other words. “Hatred” got a second chance on Steam, and it didn’t take all that long for “Hatred” to get Greenlit on Steam Greenlight either. However, the game may have been Greenlit, but the Games press (and mainstream media) saw red (literally) when they witnessed what the world of “Hatred” had to offer (the ultra violent trailer set the Internet on fire over a night). Which would be a world full of hate, death, destruction, darkness and misery.

A world which we get to see, hear and experience through the eyes of the anti-hero protagonist called “The Crusader” in “Hatred” (the story takes place in New York City, USA). A man who hates everything and everyone in this world (the whole human race pretty much), so “The Crusader” wants nothing more than to end his suffering by killing everyone in his sight. Doesn’t that sound awfully similar somehow? It sure does, and that´s because this has already been done in the past.

Running with Scissors actually created the “mass murder” simulator genre back in 1997 with their game “Postal” (Postal+ is still my number-one choice when it comes to the Postal series though). Some of you might not even have been born when “Postal” got released, as it´s been over 18 years since “Postal” caused mass hysteria in the game press and the games industry.

Let´s set the games press and media on fire

I can tell you this much though. “Postal” made everyone go absolutely nuts, And I’m not talking about the players who actually played (and enjoyed) “Postal. I´m talking about the games press, mass media and politicians. So when i first heard about “Hatred” in October last year, i just thought for myself “This game is like a more brutal nextgen version of Postal, people will go apeshit over this for sure.”

the gamepress vs gamers

The games press created much of the controversy around “Hatred”, simply because they wanted to cause headlines and get more readers.

Well, I was right. As I’ve been hearing both the games press and the mainstream media causing mass hysteria and moral panic all over the world, simply because of “Hatred”, and that´s the way it´s been since October 2014. Nothing much has changed really. The games press hated (and still hates) “Hatred,” while most of the Gaming community seems to enjoy the “Hatred.” In fact, “Hatred” became the number-one top-selling Steam game in America just recently (shortly after its release on the 1st of June).

Hell, “Hatred” even sold more copies than “Grand Theft Auto 5” and “The Witcher 3.” So I highly doubt that Destructive Creations care all that much what the games press (or the media) thinks, writes and says about “Hatred,’ but just for the fun of it. I have added some of the review scores for “Hatred” down below:

GameRankings 48,57%
Metacritic 44/100
Destructoid 55/100
Game Informer 55/10
Gamespot 3/10

I would also like to add the following comment to the subject about “Hatred Vs the Games press and media,” as I think his or her comment is spot on target:

“I just wanted to note that Hatred is currently the top seller on the US version of Steam. I have little interest in playing Hatred myself. However, like many in this subreddit, I detest the attempts at censorship via moral panic from such websites as Polygon and The Verge. The fact that the attempts by some members of the gaming press to suppress the sale of a video game have backfired is gratifying to witness. One of the favorite refrains from the games media is that gamers “need to grow up”. Well part of growing up is letting people consume media you yourself don’t care for without resorting to pubic shaming based on dodgy premises. Maybe it is the games press that needs to mature.”Unknown source (for now).

Even Markus “Notch” Persson had a say on Gaming journalism and the games press in general:

“Gaming journalism is dead.” Markus “Notch” Persson

hatred

People die all the time in the world of “Hatred”.

Totalbiscuit gets hated because of his “Hatred” gameplay video, and Hatred get’s compared to Hitler

I just knew that Totalbiscuit would receive a lot of heat for his “Hatred” video “WTF Is… – Hatred?”, so it came as no surprise to me that Totalbiscuit would get tweets such as this:

hatred rants on twitter

I think it´s safe to say that his not a fan of “Hatred”.

I don´t agree with “TheManWhoBrokeEd” however, as “Mein Kampf” is based on actual “real” events (the book is written by Adolf Hitler himself), while “Hatred” is nothing more than fiction (just like many books, movies and TV-series). I also see no point why Totalbiscuit should get accused for the nature of “Hatred” either, his not the creator of the game.

He simply shows his viewers what they could expect to see, hear and experience on “Hatred,” just like he does with all the other games that he plays. That´s nothing new under the sun so to speak. So i think that Totalbiscuit got quite a lot of undeserved hate for his “Hatred” video.

Political correctness, censorship and GOG.com Vs Gamers

With that said (and even though the brutal and violent nature of “Hatred”) , and despite everything that i have written about “Hatred” up to this point. I still feel like the biggest issue with all the fuss, moral hysteria and controversial rants, is not to be found in “Hatred,” but with the games press and mass media. It´s an adult game for mature gamers, as it contains gruesome content and strong language.

There´s a very good reason behind WHY “Hatred” has a “Adults Only 18+” rating via ESRB. Which would be the same reason why a movie such as “Canibal Holocaust” has +18 age rating. Simply because it´s content should ONLY be viewed and experienced by an adult. That´s also why I’m not a fan of censorship and political correctness (no matter if it´s a game, movie, book, art or whatever). In the world of Gaming, for example (which would be the main subject of this article of course), Gamers have matured over the years (so has the games themselves), but that can´t be said about the games press.

As the games press just keeps on acting like we´re little children who can´t take care of ourselves. In a way, they have become something like an over-protective mother of sorts. You know, the kind that worries about everything and nothing? Well, here´s a wake-up call and a reality check. Adult Gamers (+18) have no need for this kind of protection. So dear games press, please don´t treat us like infants. Thank you!

gogdotcom

GOG.com does not sell “Hatred” on their site at the moment.

I got one more thing that I want to add to this subject, and that´s the fact that GOG.com doesn´t sell “Hatred” on their homepage. This came to my attention thanks to a comment by Leonardo Cornejo Bernal on our homepage, and this is what Bernal said:

“There is something that might interest you related to these corrupt SJWs. GOG refused to sell Hatred, according to the game developers behind Hatred, GOG told them the game was good, but “They can’t sell it”. And you might wonder why would that be possible? There is a simple explanation. SJWs managed to grab GOG by the balls, they can’t prevent GOG from releasing their own “problematic” games such as The Witcher 3.

But I am damn sure they could do anything to prevent GOG from releasing a game they don’t like, and due to Hatred’s controversial status it was a sitting duck. I bet it could be Fish or some other indie corrupt who told GOG “If you sell that game we pull our games from your catalog”. The censorship is real people. We must act before it spreads and we ust push back.” – Leonardo Cornejo Bernal, a fellow Gamer

I am yet to reach out to GOG.com about this, but if it´s true. Then it´s a clear case of censorship, and once again it´s done by the SJW movement and its supporters. Sure, it´s all up to GOG to decide which games they should (and should not) sell. I just find it to be somewhat laughable and even hypocritical, since GOG.com sell games such as “The Witcher 3” on their site. It´s their own game though, so I can understand that.

However, it remains to be seen whether GOG.com will continue to refuse to sell “Hatred” via their homepage in the future though. As for my thoughts about “Hatred ,” it´s a pretty average game I have to say.

So what do you guys/girls think about all of this? And if you have played “Hatred,” what´s your thoughts on the game so far?

Disclosure:
I´m a fan of Totalbiscuit (John Bain), but even so, I think that I have been fair and balanced with my views, thoughts and opinions in this article.
