About two weeks ago I (Jonas Ek) had the chance to do a Q and A interview with PlayWood Project Aps about their upcoming rpg/strategy miniature figurines game “Wartile” (which I think looks really cool). Well, guess what? Just the other day I received all the answers to my questions! And the timing couldn´t have been any better either. As PlayWood aims to launch their “Wartile” Kickstarter campaign tomorrow (“Wartile” will also be available via Steam in about 13 hours henceforth). So, please enjoy =)

I’ve read there will be campaigns with two factions (Vikings and English lords), and that everything is settled in the middle ages (which sounds really awesome, in my opinion). However, I’m quite curious to know how the campaigns will play out. For example, will there be a thick story line where we follow specific characters or will you be the one who controls it all?

PlayWood Project Aps
The first Campaign will focus on the Vikings in the middle ages as a cultural theme. The story will play out at different levels. The overall story is presented when selecting a battle board to play, while a more personal story with the focus of key figurines will be presented while entering the battle board. WARTILE aim to be a table top experience, most of story is presented as story cards in the game, where you also will be able to find and collect story pieces hidden at the battle boards. So it’s not a thick story as you find in a classic RPG game, but a story that create a framework for all the battle boards, while adding depth

The First Campaign will have the Vikings and English Lords & knights (we don’t call them Saxons since we tend to generalize them a bit as some mission will occur in north of England and Ireland) To start with only the Viking faction will have a single player campaign, but the English faction will be playable in multiplayer matches.

We see WARTILE as a platform where we hopefully end up making many campaigns for Wartile, introducing different cultural or historical eras, such as Temple knights and the Crusaders, it could be from the Roman empire or Spartan warriors during the Persian conquest. To begin with we make the Viking campaign and hope to follow-up shortly with the English.

I have also read that the “Wartile” will take place around Scandinavia and Britain, and that there will be a fantasy setting inspired by medieval history and mythology. So, can we expect there will be legendary battles involving historical characters from that time? And maybe mythological lore, beasts and gods? (love that kind of stuff in games, specially Nordic ones).

Yes WARTILE is a fantasy game inspired by historical eras and mythological lore. We already have action cards with godly powers, for the Vikings, based on Norse mythology. And we also intend to bring in beasts that are rooted in the Viking lore.

This might be a very silly question…But due to the fact that Beowulf just happens to be one of my favorite legendary/mythological characters, and since he seems to have existed around the same time as Wartile´s plot (timeline)takes place. I simply have to ask you the following question. Will Beowulf exist in this game?

We have no plans of having him as a playable character, but he could be a source of inspiration for your Viking figurines maybe?

How will the multiplayer/pvp aspects of the game work? I mean, is it going to be like a match making type or will there be online worlds? Will the progress from the single campaigns affect your multiplayer profile? And will there be any special campaigns, quests or something like it for the multiplayer?

PlayWood Project Aps
Our multiplayer interface is still pre-alpha, as we are working on making good multiplayer maps, and game modes. Any progress made in the campaign can be used in the multiplayer maps, and anything you collect or unlock from the multiplayer games can be used in the Campaign.

For multiplayer matches there will be a match making system allowing players to choose if they want to play vs more skilled players or players progression. Furthermore, we are working on a point system where each player are allocated some points that you can spend on your lineup of figurines and through that point system we can try to balance some differences between player skills and player progression.

We really want to give our players some very different options in the multiplayer category. We are working on two game types, one is a Classic MOBA setup where two players duel it out on a balanced map. The other is a quest oriented map, where one team need to complete one or more objectives in order to win. This could be to reach certain control points, burn down enemy buildings, kidnap villagers while the other player tries to defend, as examples. These maps will likely be unbalanced, but then we have the point system to even it out a bit and are looking into different ways to reward the both players even if loosing. These game modes are more about having a fun time with the multiplayer match than grind a victory. We are also investigating into Co-op or up to 4 player games, but can’t reveal much here.

You wrote, “Wartile is a collector’s game where you can keep collecting new figures”. That´s nice of course, but you didn’t explain how one could get his or her hands on the figures? I mean, do you get them, mostly from doing quests? Or can the player (s) also win them from other players? You know, like betting figures with other players?

PlayWood Project Aps
Most figurines will be unlocked during the campaign mission as part of the player progression. But it’s also possible be purchase secondary figurine versions of all classes with the money you earn or loot during the campaign and multiplayer game. With these extra figurines you will be able to combined and experiment with different lineups.

We also hope to release new Classes or types of figurines together with additional story pieces and a few new battle or challenge boards, that can expand on existing campaigns.

I was glad when I read there were going to be multiple game modes for “Wartile” . However, since the “Wartile” product text didn’t really state what kind of game mods that would be included on release. Perhaps you could give us some clarification on the matter?

PlayWood Project Aps
We are currently working on two multiplayer modes dominance and objective based matches. In dominance you both team need to take control of x amount of relics/control points at the map. As long as a player controls a control point a Match barometer will count up. The first team who fill up the barometer will have won the match. Each team start with 4 Figurines and 4 respawn points, meaning that if a figurine is destroyed it will respawn again at the respawn point. This can happen 4 times. In one of the objective matches we currently are working on, one team will be playing defensive and the other team offensive. There will be two objectives the offensive team need to complete. In this case its breaking or burning down a palisade protecting one side of the board. The next objective is reaching and converting a sacred relic. The defensive team has to prevent the offensive player to complete those objectives. This map is timed meaning the offensive player is under pressure.

As for the “customizable objects”, does that mean for the figures and items or does it also mean that you can make your own maps?

When you get a figurine of any class it has pre-defined base stats and armor type. But in the armory you will be able to equip armor pieces to your figurine that will both change the visual appearance of the figurine and modify its stats. Those armor pieces will be of the same armor type as the figurine. This mean that a warrior figurine with medium armor (chain mail or padded leather) can choose among armor pieces that enforce and modify stats on this armor type, but won’t be able to be considered heavy armor (plated mail). You will be able to collect or unlock armor pieces by playing the game.

Did you have to do a lot of research on how these two factions (the Vikings, and the English lords) were during this era? You know, in-order to boost the realism and giving the player a feeling that there is really a battle culture difference during the combat? Like how their strategy worked, what weapons and armor they used and so on.

We wish to create a different combat experience, depending on what cultural theme you are up against, and where the Vikings will have a more brutal set of abilities that is more damage oriented and vide selection of godly action cards rooted in Norse mythology. And the English figurines will depend more on technical warfare like equipment, weapons and other battle equipment as well as more tactical oriented action cards like war machines, traps, roadblocks and so on.

Will the battles in Wartile´s take place mostly on land? Or will there also be battles on the sea and attacks from the sky?

Currently there is no plans about ship or air battles.

I saw a video where you could set houses on fire so does that mean you will be able to use the environment to your advantage? Will there be more like it in the game?

Yes, we want to include the environment as the tactical layout of the battle board. This include houses, guard towers or palisades that you can burn or beat to destruction. Doors or gates that need to be broken to gain access. Roadblocks and hidden traps that will slow down the enemy.
