Reine Works “The Wilting Amaranth” is a fairly dark and lewd yuri visual novel based on several fairy tales – you play a princess trapped inside a witch’s tower with only her and one other person for company. So, why are you there? And can any of them be trusted? Well, I’ll try to answer all of that without spoiling anything in this review of mine.
To start with, “The Wilting Amaranth” is a very short game, and the same could also be said about the game’s story. As a matter of fact, one complete route only takes about around an hour to complete. On a positive side note though, there are two endings and various others, and each of the three characters has their own route (which route you take depends on your answers to questions).
And speaking of story, The Wilting Amaranth’s story is a rather dark one, as befits original versions of fairy tales, with multiple endings that aren’t particularly happy. In addition, the three characters, whilst superciliously nice – all have problems – and can cause problems for the others – including, a bit of back-stabbing, and not always of the metaphorical kind either.
Contemplating the story, is the language. Whilst it seems old-fashioned and somewhat archaic (although still understandable), it does fit well with the style of the visual novel. Although saying that, there are still a few grammatical errors (this might be a huge turn off for some people).
As for the visuals of the game, Well…The background graphics are simple and also fairy-tale-like, with only the characters being more natural (I find the game’s characters/babes to be both cute and very sexy. So that’s a big plus in my book at least). Nevertheless, they are quite nicely designed and occasionally animate too, fitting against the background (and the story) very well.
The game eschews the usual visual novel conventions in a couple of ways. For example, there is only a quick save option available whilst playing (although fortunately each save is a new slot). Furthermore, “The Wilting Amaranth” also won’t let you save when there is an option to be taken, which means that you can’t cheat choices.
So, what about the lewd content in the game then? Well, with the adult patch, there seem to be about ten lewd CG scenes in total, but will take some effort to find them…Overall, it’s well worth getting, especially in a sale. So if you like visual novels with a somewhat different story. You also get an underwear mode, which lets you see the characters in their underwear (yay!).
That’s also why I hope to see a follow-up to “The Wilting Amaranth”. However, if that ever happens, then I hope that the game will be longer, and that there will be more lewd Yuri content in the game. Time will tell I guess, so let’s hope for the best. As for here and now though, “The Wilting Amaranth” is worth a try if you’re into lewd Yuri visual novel games.

– A few grammatical errors
Gameplay: 4/5
Graphics: 3.5/5
Sound and music: 3/5
Controls: 3/5
Replay value: 3/5
Story: 4/5
Verdict: 3.5/5
“The Wilting Amaranth” is a short, dark and visually appealing +18 lewd Yuri visual novel game. Truth be told, the game won’t take long to complete any route, but you will want to try the different routes, if only to find out more about the characters. So “The Wilting Amaranth” is definitely worth a try if you’re into lewd Yuri visual novel games.
