There are very few to none games that allow the player to see the world through the eyes of a random encounter video game monster. You know, games that shows you what´s it like to be hated by everyone and what´s it like to lose all the time? (to lose is your job). Well, that just happens to be the case in Opal Squad´s RPG/action/simulator game “Mediocre Monster“. You see. You get the great pleasure to play as a mediocre Goblin called Gob. So what does Gob do then? Well, he works as a random encounter monster. So it´s basically Gob´s job to get beaten up by heroes and adventure hungry people (all while his trying to save his own town in the process). And that means that you have to get dressed and ready for work (aka “your daily beat-up”) every single day of the week (Gob works for “The Bestiary”, which would be the worldwide leader in random monster outsourcing).

It´s a hard job being a monster in the world of Gaming. As it´s basically your job to get your ass kicked over and over again.

That´s of course a rather depressing life situation for Gob, and since his a low-level tutorial monster in a tutorial forest. Well…Let´s just say that his carer opportunities are pretty much none existing..However, Gob intends to turn his life around by becoming a well-respected monster who doesn´t die (He doesn´t really “die”, Gob just playes dead) without a really brutal fight. And that´s where you (the player) come into the picture. As it´s your job to help Gob to reach that goal (from zero to a…erhm, less zero?). And as you might imagine. That goal will take a lot of effort, determination, dedication, and hard job to achieve. Nevertheless, you know what they say right? “It´s not the goal but the journey that counts“.

However, judging by the look and feel of “Mediocre Monster” (old-school JRPG meets “Wreck-it-Ralph”). I think it´s going to be a really entertaining and funny journey. Especially since the game has been influenced by the JRPG classics from the 90s (like “Dragon Quest“, “Chrono Trigger” and “Final Fantasy“, for example). And there seem to be tons of stuff that you can do in Mediocre Monster” as well (besides the monster “level up” part), like the fact that you can improve and upgrade your town´s infrastructure (yes, you can build new buildings in your town). Don´t get me wrong now. That sure sounds really exciting and all, but I would like to try a demo of “Mediocre Monster” before I make any comments about the game´s gameplay qualities, pros and cons.

Yes, you can build new buildings and facilities in “Mediocre Monster”.

Even so, I cannot deny the fact that people are really interested in “Mediocre Monster”. Since the game got greenlit on Stream Greenlight the other day, and Opal Squad are just 19,000 dollars away from their $50,000 Kickstarter goal (there is nine days left on the Kickstarter campaign as we speak).
